Strap Locks VS Washers. Discuss......

Post by PorkyPrimeCut » Thu Jan 31, 2008 4:06 pm

Can't say much more than that really.

As I'm looking at my JM while typing this I guess its OK in the Offsets section.

Maybe I'm missing something. I just don't see the point in Strap Locks when washers would do just as good a job.

The only downside maybe is that the 1/16" taken up by the washer may take away a small amount of purchase from the screw holding the strap button.

Your opinions please ladies & gentlemen.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Yeah, I don't get them either.
Although watching an acquaintance's band the other day and his guitar fell off,
not at the strap button, but because the strap snapped, in half.
Strap lock would have done freak all good there.

It was a strat though....

I have straplocks on my SG, and at one gig the rear screw came out, sending my guitar spinning towards the monitor and chipping the headstock. I've used grolsch washers on all my other guitars and never had a single incident with them (touch wood).

I'm not a fan of straplocks, though I do see why some people really like them. I'd rather poke a screw sized hole through the strap leather, then put the original strap button through that hole. Then the strap is sandwiched between the body and strap button. It can't pop off that way and still looks like normal.

These are what you need.  I have them on all my guitars.  They are the best.

I use Schallers.  I like the solid "click" when they attach.  No fears of dropping my guitar at all.

My Jazz Bass has a big dent in the bottom from dropping it...Now all my gigging axes have Schallers.

I'm a fan of Dunlops.  Sneer all you want.

After breaking the headstock off my bandmate and friend's Guild jazz hollow body guitar (oh, about 40 years ago!),  :o :( I've been paranoid ever since.  Yeah, I got his guitar fixed, but I can't even begin to convey the "shit my pants" feeling  :-X :k I had when his guitar dropped in my garage (band's practice space) when he wasn't there and I saw the headstock go flying across the room!  40 years later is still makes me feel bad.  The guitar was fixed, but if it was mine it would have really bugged me.

You do need to make sure the straploks are seated well -- I usually use a quality wood glue on the screws for extra insurance.  Haven't dropped a guitar since.  Play wear is cool...dropping is NOT!

If you haven't smapped a headstock (on someone else's guitar no less!), I'm quite sure you don't know what I'm talking about...
