Anyone ever deliberately mismatch headstock and body colors?

Post by amv » Tue Feb 03, 2015 11:53 pm

Offsets are unique among most Fender-style guitars in their uncommonly frequent matching headstocks. But despite all the modding, customizing and Frankenstein-ing I see around here, I've never really seen a deliberately mismatched body and headstock. You'd think by now somebody would have made their statement that way. To me, the most obvious choice would be something like a Candy Apple Red body with a Lake Placid Blue headstock.

Personally I think this would look awful, btw, but I've got serious morbid curiosity and I'm amazed it hasn't been done yet.

The one example I've seen is an LPB headstock with a sunburst body, but I'd really like [read: hate [read: love]] to see one color set against another (sunburst almost doesn't count in my book).

I think a black headstock on a colored body can look pretty sweet. It works well on both the Lee Renaldo and Thurston Moore JMs.

I didn't think of that, but you're right. That is a slick look.

There was this thread: http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... =8&t=79997" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; with some mockups. In the end the OP went for a white headstock on a surf green Jag.

I love the idea for 2 reasons.

One, I love partscasters, and custom colors. So the idea of matching 2 custom colored components for a partscaster is appealing to me.

Two, I never got the "matching" "mismatching" colors thing. Art is subjective and there shouldn't be rules about what colors go together. My wardrobe is testament to my feelings on the subject.

Thanks for getting that video out, I remembered seeing something like this, but not exactly what and where. I really, really like the "mismatch" on his Jag.

I've actually thought about this as well, recently. Some sort of red, white, and blue scheme comes to mind..........the only other idea that makes sense to me would be to do deliberate 2-tone paint schemes that also involve two colors on the body as well - reminiscent of the pastel color two-tone automobile paint schemes that were especially popular in the 50s and into the 60s. Think of Surf Green, Seafoam, Daphne Blue, Sonic Blue, Shell Pink, Salmon, Fiesta Red, Canary Yellow, Turquoise, etc. with white.....or perhaps some colors like Dakota Red with a Cream color........could be pretty "retro cool" ! :)

Rather than all the dumb mongrel mashups of models and features Fender seems to be doing these days, this type of paint schemes on standard vintage-spec type models might be more successful and appealing. Certainly would be to me.

Link no longer functional, but this one was a sweet well worn mustang with Fiesta red body and LPB headstock.

My jazzmaster.

Japanese candy apple red, I made the black body painting. I wanted it really dirty, and I'm really happy with it.

The opposite of my Squier VM jazzmaster, that I made "matching headstock". Same kind of dirty paint job, but creamy white.

That Black/Red Tort, and CAR headstock is KILLER :w00t: ! Being a traditional guitar painter, this idea did not exist in my reality. Thanks!

I love the idea of an Olympic White headstock on a Lake Placid Blue body. Blue and white are hardly an outrageous coupling though :jacked:
