Yes, I cannot believe how much difference the black guard makes. I love tortoise, but this black guard looks so much better than the dark tortoise guard that was on there:

Apart from the new guard I added a thumb rest and a vintage-style bridge (to replace the Schaller roller bridge on there). I guess I'm technically downgrading the specs, but I prefer to have it close to its original state.

I think your Squier looks great! They're really putting a lot of effort in those these days, aren't they?

I actually sold a Squier (an 80s JV-series JB in sunburst) to buy this one. I hate to admit it, but if I'm 100% honest that was actually a better instrument, in retrospect. Can't beat the looks of this one though.

+1.  They really have made an effort, especially on the Vintage Modified models.

Of the four Fender models that people actually like (the Strat, Tele, P-Bass, and Jazz Bass -- as opposed to those other models that we obsess over and seemingly no one else cares about) the Jazz Bass is by far the coolest.

Yeah, I guess it's the only Mainstream Offset (TM). Although I guess the jag and JM are well on their way these days.

Awesome!

...and here's the thread BTW - it have turned to some kind of language discussion though....but the parts are beginning to drop in, so soon....

index.php?topic=6454.0

I've said it before - the black guard makes them look sooo 70's (the tuxedo B+B is coolness too I think)- I've been interested in that Squire for a while, but there's always a guitar (project/new/repair) inbetween ;)
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

It's true!

A Fretless Jazz Bass was my first offset, though I had always dreamed of a Jazzmaster or Jag.

Same here. I had always loved p basses but I was wanting to spend a lot of money on a bass and I didn't want to be stuck with just one sound so I bought my Fender American Jazz bass. Also I felt like they looked better on me. P basses actually look better on me. But when it comes to guitars, I always wanted a Jazzmaster, so I ended up getting a Telecaster but Jazzmasters look better on me.  ::)

So now that I have a jazzmaster, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I need to find me a nice P bass. ^-^

I don't think I've ever really shown my jazz basses, so I borrowed a digital camera from my 10 year old nephew (isn't that a sad statement) and shot a few pics.

Here's a group shot and some close ups of my :

Sunburst 1973/74 Jazz Bass.  (pots say very late December 1973, so most likely a 74 build.  Has 4 bolt neck))
Bought from a druggie muso in 2003 who'd "scored" it from his father or uncle who had bought it originally in the 70s.  He had actually bought some humbuckers to replace the existing PUPs but thankfully had never got around to stuff up the bass.  (they are now in one of Docs J bass.)  The black guard with sunburst appears to be an original combination, so it may have been an extremely early use of the black guard.

Natural 1975 Jazz Bass  (with 3 bolt neck)
First guitar/bass I ever bought, sometime in 2000/2001
Again black guard is original, which is interesting given it has while/pearl binding and block markers.  (I have to say for me personally, black block markers are  :k , just looks like someone has stuck duct tape on the neck)

Custom Shop 5 String Jazz Bass (built aorund 2002).
I ordered a IBM finish with a non standard (at the time) chrome neck PUP cover (ashtray).  I have always been disappointed with the colour.  As shown in the last photo, if the colour was the "blue" version all of the time I would be happy, but most of the time it looks "grey", which to me is boring.  This bass has active PUPs

Man, David all of those Jazz Basses are so  :? :? :? :?

But this one is off the charts!  I can't play five stringers very well, though.  Fucks me all up!  :D

Looks like someone needs to get a bunch of F-ashtrays! Great to finally see them, David! I guess my taste in blocks is somewhat different from yours...I love pearl blocks in rosewood, but they look wrong to me in maple. Maple just NEEDS black blocks (or dots. Can't stand pearl/white dots in maple either).
