NGD: 2000 Fender AVRI '62 Jazzmaster - Shell Pink
Haven't posted much in the last few years but this rarity is so cool I wanted to share it... Just picked up this 2000 Fender AVRI '62 Jazzmaster in Shell Pink while guitar hunting in Japan last week.
This is one I've been after for several years, and honestly couldn't believe I found it hanging in the corner of the used section of a random shop. I had gone into several guitar stores, thought to myself "wow, all the good stuff has been exported" and next thing you know, I'm eying this one.
These don't often hit the used market, considering only 50 were built. But this one was the perfect one for me... Really well played in but not messed with. It's 100% stock, minimal (if any) fretwear, but super faded finish with all the signs of being loving played over the last 24 years. I've become real fond of special color AVRI '62 Jazzmasters, but this particular run has all sorts of lore around it that I thought I'd use this thread to try and shed some definitive light as I discover more.
Here's what my understanding is so far (but please chime in if you've got better info)
- Yamano special ordered 50 AVRI '62 Jazzmasters and Jaguars in each of the following colors, all the matching headstocks: LPB, IBM, BMM, CAR, and Shell Pink. All of these guitars had build dates within 1999-2000
- The finish used may have been the precursor to the Thin Skin finishes later used in special runs. I will say that upon my unprofessional inspection, the finish is different from that of my regular Ice Blue Metallic AVRI '62 Reissue Jazzmaster. I will take some comparison photographs.
- The Fender Custom Shop may have been involved in production... now this is the claim I am most skeptical of.
Here's a shot that shows the accurate color with all the fading...
And here it is with my 1994 Fender MIJ Jazzmaster in Blond with gold hardware, bought on my previous Japan trip!

Don't know about production numbers, but these five are the only finishes I've ever seen (and I've looked!).
Nice color btw, kinda like the CME Pacific Peach.

I think a good number of the rare AVRI finish offsets were exported. I reimported my fiesta red AVRI JM 6 years ago for a very good price. I’d have lit every credit card on fire for that pink one. Good score!

I’m not convinced I’ve ever seen such a perfect colour, wow!

Wonderful find - congrats! I was in Tokyo last year and saw some great guitars. Got put off with the logistics in the end: didn’t fancy my chances negotiating free passage on the plane home for any purchases!
Did it come with a hard case or one of those weird flimsy soft cases?

I was JUST there like two weeks ago and they did not have this, btw.
I wouldn't have got it as a metallic man exclusively, but I would have remembered that guitar.

Came with the OSHC (although, missing the case candy). Can confirm that a Jazzmaster case fits perfectly in the overhead bin of a Boeing 787... And not only that, but the gate agents at the airport came up to me unprompted and offered me pre-boarding to make sure I got it on safely...flying_squad wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 6:22 amWonderful find - congrats! Timing must've been on my side... I couldn't believe it myself considering how often I specifically look for these, and seldomly find them...N0_Camping4U wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 6:33 amI was JUST there like two weeks ago and they did not have this, btw.

Oh wow - sounds like great service on the plane. Which airline was it? UK carriers are notorious for their gouging: every single one says that instruments need their own “seat” on the plane, or it has to be placed in the hold. Neither option workable on a budget or with a newly acquired guitar sadly.Came with the OSHC (although, missing the case candy). That’s pretty cool that the case fitted so perfectly in the overhead bin!
