Re: I Want a Nice Jazzmaster - 30 Years Later
Uh oh - the pressure is on
I really hope you like it if you snag one. I see people describe the neck as chunky to thin, so everyone seems to have a differing opinion! Or maybe they’ve tried examples from different years. Mine is a ‘23, manufactured a couple of months ago. The neck feels wider than I usually play, although tend to think that about most JMs. But I don’t have particularly long fingers and also tend to notice the cramp when a chunkier profile or shoulder adds a little extra stretch distance to the low e. I often like to wrap my thumb too, which I feel on a chunkier neck, so I’m confident in saying mine is a comfortable c.
Full disclosure - I love chunky necks too, but for different hand positions. My favourite necks for most things, though, are Japanese Mustangs, Jags and Jagmasters.
Fingers crossed that the profile works for you too! It’s a fantastic guitar, but I know how irrelevant everything else can be if you don’t get on with a neck.

That one isn't released until the last week of November, so gotta wait about 2 months. Looks like a nice one, though.

I will say the TVL neck is quite full, and specifically has slightly sharp binding "corners" which you may need to try before you buy. On the other hand, superb quality and arguably the prettiest stock Jazzmaster since about 1965, or maybe ever.

Well, I ended up buying a TVL for $900 plus tax and shipping. If I don’t love the neck, I’m sure I can break even when selling it on. It is a truly beautiful guitar, that’s for sure!
This thread has taught me that there are just way too many Jazzmasters to try!! Thanks again to everyone

Nice! I paid about 1700 Aus dollars for mine, used but mint, so that’s kind of the same with the down under tax. It’s the most I ever spent on a guitar by a mile, but it was also to support my friend’s shop. It’s not my fault I ended up with a beautiful Jazzmaster as a result. I suspect you’re gonna love it. If anything the neck is most like my 78 Musicmaster and I know you like those.

how's the TVL working out for you? I love the look but haven't gotten to play onebenji wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2023 7:21 pmWell, I ended up buying a TVL for $900 plus tax and shipping. I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

I have an AO JM. It's a well put together guitar and very good quality. While i like the 9.5" as per the OP, the neck is pretty chunky. Which i loved at first but now I've got an AO 60s Strat with a slimmer neck (and 9.5"), I'd prefer my JM to be slimmer. Not a game breaker, I still love playing it.mcatano wrote: ↑Mon Sep 25, 2023 9:33 amYou might look at the AO models from a few years ago - they seem weirdly underpriced relative to the AV65 and are pretty close in specs aside from the 9.5" radius on the AO (which is your preference anyway).
There are a few used ones listed on Guitar Center's used page right now for under $1800 - as well as a few recent AVRI II options for about the same price.

Update: the TVL actually had a pickup issue upon delivery. I didn't really love the neck either. A bit too thick for my tastes. Send it back, got a refund, and found a 1993 JM-66 on Reverb. Got the seller down to $850 due to some minor aesthetic issues on the headstock. Best $850 I've ever spent. Still need to upgrade pickups and electronics, but omg... this is the guitar for me. MIJ FTW!

Well you just made me realize I've been playing for 35 years. You'd think I'd be better, lol.

Sorry the TVL didn’t work out for you! Necks are the most personal thing about a guitar, and it’s difficult if you don’t click with them. Glad you got a refund and found one a JM you do click with.
Do we get pics of the JM-66?

This. 200% completely agree and second this post.
This is what you want at that price range.
Quality is outstanding and they have a similar to same profile (they vary a bit) to the 62avri with that super thin super comfortable thin c neck.
