Yeah, they all filled their rolls perfectly. Martin’s songs were a great starting point for the musician in the band (Alan) to make interesting and dynamic arrangements. This is what I’ve missed the most; their albums have become so passionless and milquetoast.
Sorry but fletcher was basically the luckiest man in the music industry. No real talent or ability. No actual evidence that he contributed anything to the music. That’s pretty astonishing for someone in a band.
With no intension of disrespecting the deceased, I will never understand his “role”.

Oh for sure. To clarify, when I said they filled their roles perfectly, Fletch's role was to manage the group. The fact he could play a bassline or hit an electronic pad on time onstage was a bonus.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Glad I got to see them circa '88 for Music and the Masses tour.
I was at the Rose Bowl for the 101 concert/film! I think I was about 15 or 16, and it’s still in my top 5 concerts of all time.
Isn’t wild they got to stadium level? My one and only DM show was at Merriweather Post Pavilion, which is not a huge venue. It was ‘88 which makes me now wonder what album they were touring. Or did they just blow up around this time?

Black Celebration started their trajectory but they really blew up in the US with Music For the Masses, and solidified that status with Violator.

Wow, great detective work there! I’ve always heard similar things about both Martin and Dave; genuinely nice and down to earth. I think their humble roots have always kept their feet on the ground, relatively speaking.

A friend of mine just did a remix of it (unauthorized) and it sounds like an unreleased track from Black Celebration. It's really good.
I think the heads would really love it.

As a casual fan of Depeche Mode I always wondered why that brilliant run of the early to mid 90’s was never really duplicated. I guess I have my answer now, this Wilder guy was important!

Personally I think their best era was 1983-84. But everything up till 1993 was pretty amazing.

French TV Show.
Nice looking guitar, but music is meh (from an Alan Wilder/Recoil connoisseur
)

Thanks so much for finding it! (Sorry I'm late back to the party!)
