Marr Jag Saved

Post by enricosonic » Wed Jan 25, 2023 7:24 pm

I joined this place a few years ago but I've been a total stranger. I'm posting because I was about to angrily part with my Marr Jag. Why? Because of its thin, weak, trebly, brittle sound which just pissed me off time and again. I love Marr the player and I've always wanted a Jag so it was kind of a double whammy gut punch when the thing sucked ass.

Anyway, because of some prior thread or maybe just a post I found here, I simply lowered the treble side of the pickups (duh) fairly considerably and cranked my amp up a bit. The change is totally transformational.

Thanks for giving me a re-education in electric guitars 101.

Jags are odd beasts. Despite what our ears say, shortscale guitars actually have more fundamental and less upper harmonics thanks to physics (like SS basses do) and you can, subsequently, get them to sound really thick and righteous if you get them right in that sweet spot.

Glad you found that spot.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Oh wow, I've been playing Jags for nearly 30 years and hadn't once thought about pickup-height adjustment. A tremendous thank you for posting this!

A wise man once said, adjusting pickup height might achieve more than a pickup swap.

You can do more with one screwdriver than a wall of power tools.

I've thought about switching out to 250k pots. Maybe I should start with the pickup height. The Jaguar is interesting in that's it's really aggressive and spiky sounding, but I'm not sure that's a sound that just works for me.

Tangential tip:
I've found that adding a little compression to the Marr Jaguar turns it from "really good" to my favorite guitar. I've been using a Diamond Comp Jr as an "always on" compressor, I'd guess the mooer yellow comp would do well, too, but I have no experience with those.

(I played a show last night where it was unintentionally off for the first few songs... hmm, something sounds wrong here... clicked it back on and everything was right again in the world).

I do this exactly with a Marrguar and Mooer Yellow Comp, so your guess is, in my experience, correct!

I can vouch, I use a pulp 'n peel with it and it sounds fan-fucking-tastic.
