Well, not for Mascis tone, but Alnico 2 is great for late 50's Jazzmaster tone and they are less expansive then SD Antiquity 1 pickups.

Re: J Mascis signature Jazzmaster pickups
Exactly. Agree on both…
I’m not a Mascis fan at all but I’m probably going to buy a set….
I’d rather see these labeled as “pure vintage 50s jazzmaster pickups” or something like that but whatever!
The antiquity 1 are as expensive as the lollar alnico 2 offering.
These msrp at 129 and there’s already a dealer selling new sets for 109. So we’re looking at less than half the price and they’re not even widely released yet. There will probably be sub 100$ deals like we see with the pv65 set.
Nice to have another more affordable option even if those 2 may sound a bit better.

Yeah. I meant to add more stuff to my post about that. Like: if you are going for the particular sound these pickups provide that's great, and perhaps that's really what they are all about. Why some people thought slapping his name on this was a good call is beyond me-- but I'm just another internet gear nerd who likes to armchair quarterback the Fender corporation.sugarandopium wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 8:22 amExactly. On top of the eventual AV II Jaguar and Jazzmaster I buy.
I have too much guitars; I am always torn between selling some and buying more. Often at the same time.

I feel like I missed something in the marketing. Are these new JM pickups really comparable to the Antiquities? For some reason I thought they were super overwound p90ish pickups similar to those found on the Squier JMJM.sugarandopium wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 8:22 amExactly. Agree on both…

They don’t have screw pole pieces or bar magnets so not really anything like a p90nashmaster wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 1:56 pmI feel like I missed something in the marketing. Re: J Mascis signature Jazzmaster pickups
They're proper A2 JM pickups, which are overwound about 5-10% compared to Pure Vintage pickups, so they're definitely competing with the A2 Antiquity in terms of aiming for the warmer black bobbin JM type tone.nashmaster wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 1:56 pmI feel like I missed something in the marketing. Am I the only one who thinks it's odd that his (very, very well selling) signature JM had actual P90s in but his signature JMs pickups are traditional style JM pickups? Make your bloody mind up Fender/Mascis.

And he uses noiseless overwound pickups live, in guitars not used on his albums.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 11:28 pmAm I the only one who thinks it's odd that his (very, very well selling) signature JM had actual P90s in but his signature JMs pickups are traditional style JM pickups? There’s no law he has to use his signature gear, I suppose.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

I think it could be similar to the whole SRV/Texas special pickups thing. They weren’t made to match his gear, but to approximate his sound at home through a more modest setup.sal paradise wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 11:36 pmAnd he uses noiseless overwound pickups live, in guitars not used on his albums.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 11:28 pmAm I the only one who thinks it's odd that his (very, very well selling) signature JM had actual P90s in but his signature JMs pickups are traditional style JM pickups? Though in the case of these pickups I think the truth is that they simply put JM’s name on what would’ve been Pure Vintage 59 pickups since he’s associated with the instrument.

Re: J Mascis signature Jazzmaster pickups
Yeah I chock it up to just marketing strategy. They’ll sell a boatload more J Mascis Signature pups than one’s labeled just as “Pure Vintage 59’s”
Also just works out since J has a few 59 Jazzmasters

Has anyone actually seen the coils yet? I couldn't find any pictures online. There's still a chance that they look like V-Mods or Yosemites under the covers.
