Offset with less than 6 strings?

It was noted that basses don’t get much discussion here… Got a cool bass? I want to see it ;D

MIJ Jaguar bass. The only mods are a Hipshot kickass bridge and some blade pickups (unknown brand but they sound killer).

It's not clear to me if we are just doing offset waist basses here or what.

Here's a couple more, here's my fretless Jazz bass. It's a Player series and that made a great platform to upgrade, and I basically gutted it.

This is not an offset bass, but it's a great one, it's a G&L SB-1:

Haha when I read the title my first thought was the Warren Ellis signature 4-string tenors ....

As with Nick Cave on Higgs Boson Blues on ACL ...

One of the tenor models ...

My squier cv jazz. Not thrilling, but does what it needs to for home recording. Sounds exactly like what I want a JB to sound like: a more manageable stingray.

Another Jag, little brother’s old bass. He didn’t like the active pickups, but it was a handsome thing.

Yeah, the active circuitry in these is garbage IMHO. Mines all disconnected and pickups swapped...much much better.

Which bit isn't clear? Offset or bass? Because it's in the offset section, and says offset in the title.

Seems pretty clear to me Larry  ;)

'74 Musicmaster Bass. Came to me with the pickguard chopped up and a jazz bass control plate installed, and some very thick, shiny shellac lacquer covering the thing. Stripped the lacquer and finished with some oil that I can't remember. That was 10 years ago and it's a lot darker shade of brown now than it was then. Original pickup was fun (70s strat pickup) but wasn't ideal. I ended up replacing the lot with a MOJO Musicmaster Bass pickup and new CTS pots. This is one of my favourite instruments and I have some great memories with it from years of gigs and festivals.

There was a mid-90s band called Idaho that had a bit of a Pavement sound to them. They used custom made 4 string offset guitars. I remember one was a Jazzmaster shape with a Tele style neck and pickups, while the other looked more like a Mustang.

There are some pictures on their website. I don’t think they were short scale Tenor guitars? They looked to be full scale, just with a thin 4 string neck. They had custom made pickups with 4 poles too. I vaguely remember talking to one of the guitarists (Dan) about them around 1995, but I only remember that some luthier in LA made them.

My brother’s main bass is a late 90s MIM ‘62 reissue. Sunburst with dots, about as ordinary as a bass comes.

It’s sound, however is unreal. He uses a sansamp live & still manages to get a full, lively sound from it. It’s kinda the perfect JB to my ears. We’ve done so many eps & albums together other the years and it always works.

Here’s a good example of the bass nicely driven (can’t remember what amp this was tracked with): https://devereux.bandcamp.com/track/alaska
