Replacing my Squier Jag pickups with ‘62 AVRI!
I noticed the microphonic nature of the CV jag pickups not in a band situation but while home recording in front of my studio monitors! I know I could wax pot them and maybe one day I will since they are decent sounding pickups. I always planned on upgrading them to the pure vintage 65 pickups anyway. So I go to buy the 65 pickups and they sell for $130 for the set. I’m fine with that, always liked them. But while searching I found Fender USA 62 jag pickups for a lot cheaper, brand new in packaging for like $90 for the pair. I went with the 62’s! When USA jags were finally reissued in the late 90’s I went thru many jags and always thought the pickups were great. So… I wonder is fender still making these or did I just get some NOS? I don’t really remember the difference but I know some think the 65 pure vintage pickups are a bit too trebly. Been awhile since I played the AVRI 62’s, were they a bit warmer?

Re: Replacing my Squier Jag pickups with ‘62 AVRI!
I seem to recall that when the AO series was brought out, they kept the AV65 version of the pickups in the Jazzmaster but went back to the AVRI62 pickups for the AO Jaguar, so I guess that would mean they are still making the AVRI62 pups, not sure if they are available separately or how they would be labelled. Or even if my memory is accurate …
I’ll do some googling, stand by for a post retracting the above ..

Ok, google says the pickups in AO Jaguar are Pure Vintage 62, so maybe they are rebranded AVRI 62 pups??

Possibly. The ones I’m getting look like old plastic bag packaging from before the pure vintage ‘65 came out in the nice box. I may have just got some new old stock. Should be an upgrade either way. The Squiers sound good but would definitely give feedback issues in a band situation.

I found the '62 AVRI to be super ice-picky. I settled on a pair of Novak Jag-V's.

I believe the 62 jag pups are still in production. If not, they’re probably recently out, either that or fender had made way way too many because they’re still readily available.

So I got the pickups. The label just says ‘62 Jaguar Assy Neck and ‘62 Jaguar Assy Bridge. Not the same packaging the old AVRI ‘62 pickups came in. They could still be the same but who knows. I got them installed last night and definitely an improvement to the Squier classic vibe pickups (which I didn’t hate). Nothing ice picky. Neck is fantastic, yes the bridge pup is bright, but the Jag bridge pickup is supposed to be bright!

Another point on this situation. I got a Fender mod shop Jaguar built for me last year. The pickup choices were Vmods or ‘62 vintage. I went with the 62’s and glad I did. Perhaps, the pure vintage 65’s for jags are no longer made now and these are the replacements?

Seems that way, since the American Originals, at least. The AOs come with the AVRI62 pickups.gutter rock wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 4:15 amPerhaps, the pure vintage 65’s for jags are no longer made now and these are the replacements?
Having played both extensively, I greatly prefer the AV65 pickups.

Re: Replacing my Squier Jag pickups with ‘62 AVRI!
I have both a 2012 Squier VM Jazzmaster and a 2014 VM Jaguar. I put the Fender ‘62 pickups in the Jazzmaster and the Fender ‘65 pickups in the Jaguar. Very happy with both. I bought a new Jazzmaster right after high school graduation in 1964. Fender didn’t change those pickups until 1965 so the ‘62’s would be the same as what were in my ‘64 Jazzmaster. It sure sounds as I remember the old guitar sounding.
At the time my lead player had a new 1964 Jaguar. I played it fairly often back then. Not sure how close my VM Jaguar sounds to his old one but it is at least very similar. I do know it is at least close and sounds really good.
