Candy Apple Red on CIJ & MIJ
Hey There,
I don't know if this was already discussed in this way:
As we all know there are two different CAR Shades around for Japan-reissues of Jazzmasters/Jaguars. Candy Apple Red (CAR) and Old Candy Apple Red (OCR)
So my question is: Are only the Made in Japan Models made in the 90's painted with CAR and the Crafted in Japan Models painted with OCR or were both shades/colors available for both reissues?
I would be glad you can help me out.
Jonas

Beats me what all colors they were making at which time, but here is my 1993 Made in Japan Jazzmaster:

Both available for both, noting that OCR is far less common than CAR.

What also makes things more complicated is that some of the early Japanese CAR finishes have darkened/yellowed clearcoats that mean there's shades in between now so when you see one it's not always immediately obvious (especially in photographs) which one it is.

Re: Candy Apple Red on CIJ & MIJ
'Proper' CAR is made with primer then a metallic gold OR silver, oversprayed with translucent red (then laquer/clearcoat over the top). More recently, apparently they use a single coat which approximates CAR and saves labour / time but perhaps without the depth of colour. Perhaps they do that on Squiers?
In the 60's, Fender used both silver and gold. Some people seem to think the original 63/64 CAR was usually silver base (I guess that was the original DuPont colour?) and then the post-CBS guitars had a gold base. Then there's the thinkness of the red coat which defines how dark the red is. Plus the yellowing of some lacquers as above. It's also very sensitive to lighting conditions so it's almost impossible to find decent pictures online comparing the silver/gold bases.
One theory is that Fender Japan started doing OCR because whatever recipe they used for CAR was too light. No idea when they made the change. At any rate, OCR is darker and came slightly later so your theory accords with mine.
Source: I did a looooaaad of research before I did a (gold base) nitro CAR refin.

Actually I try to identify for a friend who is looking for an OCR like mine. He has an offer where the seller says it is CAR but isn't quite sure about it. Actually we are trying to find a CIJ in old candy apple red desperately. I post some pictures of the given offer. These are very inconclusive, can you identify?johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Mon Apr 25, 2022 10:22 pm

Btw: I'd like to ask if there is any source where to find JM-66's in different colours for purchase? Do you guys have any idea.

Re: Candy Apple Red on CIJ & MIJ
ok. so the CAR on my CIJ is pretty bright all things considered. usually CAR kinda gets darker over time but this is (mostly) still CAR.
i have seen some CAR from the 90's go an almost burgundy colour before now too. OCR tends to look like it started out as more of a wine red and as it ages, it almost goes a really redish brown

The seller is correct, that is 100% Candy Apple Red.jonnydevo wrote: ↑Wed Apr 27, 2022 11:29 amActually I try to identify for a friend who is looking for an OCR like mine. He has an offer where the seller says it is CAR but isn't quite sure about it.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Mon Apr 25, 2022 10:22 pm

Good luck on your search; Fender Japan guitars in CAR are a dime a dozen here, I can only recall seeing a couple in OCR - ever.

One of my JMs was OCR back when I bought it in 2008:
I lived with it like that for a few years then stripped it and shot it in black nitro. It's currently away getting a new colour applied with Jon Rexter

^^^ On this screen at least that looks like 'regular' CAR?

OCR Jaguar, Fender Japan:
(Pinched from an eBay listing, these show the 'wine red' tones that Sean mentioned pretty well though.)

Yeah, it definitely does, and is a good example of how different lights and photos can be deceptive. The stock photos from back when it was released are equally as confusing...
It was marketed as 'Old Candy Apple Red' as part of the limited run. Next to a standard CAR in person it was obviously much darker.

This is my OCR Jazzmaster. They are quite a bit darker than traditional CAR.
In terms of years, there is currently a 1995 OCR JM for sale near me, so they must have been doing them for awhile.

Thanks for all your help. My friend made the decision for the above pictured one. We are excited how it looks in real life.
