No I don’t think it was actually clay - likely some kind of fibre composite or resin combo.

I have faux clay dots in a 59 Strat reissue and can’t say I’m wild about them as they don’t really look correct I think they are just brown plastic.

The 59-64 'clay' dots were actually just fibreboard.

Looks like both the white and the black dots were vulcanized fibreboard. I always thought that just the black dots were. I knew they were left over material from making the pickups.
