NGD! American Original Jazzmaster

Post by jazzyjeff » Wed Dec 08, 2021 4:13 am

Hi There.

I used to own a Japanese Jazzmaster from 1994 that I've regretted selling for years. Finally I've remedied that and last week I bought a brand new Fender American Original Jazzmaster in Ocean Turquoise metallic.

This has to be one of the nicest colours I've ever seen on any guitar and the tortoise shell guard looks incredible next to it. I've always wanted a Jazzmaster with a bound neck and dot markers. The binding looks beautiful next to the maple neck. The guitar sounds incredible and stays in tune perfectly when using the trem system. For me Fender's best ever guitar. Ideally I'd like to put a mastery bridge on it and a stay trem arm and collet which will come in time.

Congrats! I bought the same guitar in Sunburst about 3 weeks ago!

Heads up that it took only about 3 hours of play time for the bridge saddles to start wandering causing string buzz. I pulled the bridge and dabbed every threaded screw with lock-tite and that seems to have solved it.

I agree that these are absolutely wonderful instruments!

Hell yeah, that looks awesome. Personally, I'd throw a mint guard on it, but that's just me.

Congrats! Love OTM. Agree with Jonsie on changing up the guard. Either mint or go for a spitfire or lavaguard for amazing vintage looking tort.

I actually love the pick guard the way it is. I just ordered the Staytrem arm and collet and in January I'll be getting a mastery bridge. That will probably be the last change I make to this guitar. It will be perfect!

OTM with tort is OUTSTANDING!!! One of the best colour combos, IMHO. Enjoy!

Congrats – these are great guitars, and I can’t see myself ever parting with mine. Like you, I love the tort guard. I tried a mint one after seeing some pics of one with a mint guard on here, but I didn’t think the mint guard looked as good on my own guitar, strangely. I may go for a Lavaguard sometime though.

I put a Staytrem collet and arm on mine a while back. There was nothing really wrong with the stock collet or arm, but it’s nice how smooth the Staytrem is, and the arm has a more pleasing curve. I went with an AmPro bridge on mine. Stays in tune no matter how much I use the trem, and I use it a lot.

Anyway, enjoy!

Thanks very much! The Staytrem arm and collet are on their way. In hindsight I'm probably just going to go with a mustang bridge on mine. The Mastery bridge is six times more expensive and seems to come with some issues. I had a mustang bridge on my last Jazzmaster along with the staytrem arm and collet and was very happy with that. It also looked the part.

You probably already know – the American Professional Jazzmaster/Jaguar bridge I mentioned is essentially a Mustang bridge with a 9.5” radius, so it’ll work perfectly on your Jazzmaster.

Here’s one on Reverb (no affiliation):

I have the same feelings about the Mastery: expensive, not necessarily a perfect solution, and looks a bit too space age on a Jazzmaster.

Loctite the screws and then try sticking with the original bridge a while. It's totally functional, these AOs have the angled neck pocket. I play mine with 10s and am not a light handed player, and I haven't had a string jump out of position once in two years.
