NGD: 50s SQ CV JM
I was only ordering some strings from Thomann and somehow stumbled across the Squier late 50s (2-tone, gold guard) JM...
does anyone know whether they have somewhat fatter necks than the CV60s counterparts, as is the case with the CV 50s vs 60s strats? anyway, I have a super nice MK neck stashed away somewhere...
will share impressions soonish.

Re: oh no I ordered a guitar again... 50s SQ VM JM
I've read somewhere that these are ash veneer over poplar (I was wondering about the nice figuring... but we'll see what an actual one looks like, haha)... only thing I really seem to care about is neck feel (not easy, but can be solved) and setup (easy)... I dunno what to expect at this price point, and I must not touch any other of my guitars for a while as a means to evaluate the Squier for what it is. As in: I must not compare the new arrival to the more expensive ones I have sitting here. Anyway, I've been a sucker for 2-tone burst and gold guard since forever, and looking forward to check out the new one with an open mind

Re: oh no I ordered a guitar again... 50s SQ VM JM
it's here... I'm still at the office so I only could take a out for a few mins:
looking pretty decent at first glance, not too heavy, I'd say maybe a 200-300 grams more than a real lightweight one
reddish streaks in the ash veneer, finish is flawless
nice fretwork! not a single fret end sticking out, frets need a bit of polish though
somewhat greyish laurel fretboard is dry as a bone (we'll see about that when I get home)
neck feels like a normal C (not fat, not thin, can take measurements if anyone's interested)
neck is super straight, nut is 'decent' and slots could easily be lowered 2-3 tenths of a millimeter
veneer
so far, it leaves a pretty good impression for a 400 € guitar
and I only have a tiny honeytone amp at the moment

Re: NGD: 50s SQ CV JM
back home:
trem is a joke to some degree. works without binding, clicks or clanks, but arm length reminds me of a strat one.
bent the arm by orienting backwards and giving it a good jank (bit better action), but still... too short.
plus, the trem makes a comical 'durrrrr' if you let it go quickly from a non-neutral state..
never experienced this before, with no trem of any sort. further investigation required.
begone, you wimpy .09s or whatever they are
someone seems to have an uncontrollable urge for drilling
polishing frets (good, but not good enough) with 3600 grade micro-mesh and sanding sponge
better, but fretboard seems to get lighter with only a hint of super high grade mesh? is the fretboard dyed?
if it were, I wouldn't even consider it an offense - it's a 400 bucks guitar, and I don't even know what laurel is supposed to look like.
hmmm maybe the MK neck -been gathering dust for the last few years- might be an option?
anyway, both fretboards are are repeatedly 'soaking' (well, not really) in a mixture of fret doctor and lemon oil (fret doctor alone I have only a little amount left and need to spare the rest for the vintage necks), good enough.
https://youtu.be/Bg21M2zwG9Q?t=88
hmm so what's under the hood? typical mini pots and such of some sort, but wiring and soldering seems pretty clean
painting shield in cavities
rather clean job, looking much better than last pic
neck has been soaking up oil like a friggin deserter for the last hour.
as soon as I wipe excess off and allow it to sit, it feels like when the guitar arrived.
gradually getting better, but maaan, this fretboard is thirsty.
pups:
sorry, I messed up the image links. but there's aticker on them with a reference to 'black'... black bobbin pups because? I can't tell. have no amp here. sorry for losing the pics. will try an re-upload.
what do I know, and I can't even try test them, but I simply assume they're jazzmasterish. I have a whole parts drawer full of pups. I assume these are "Duncan designed" or of such some sort. Good enough for me.
hmm, hmm, how about the veneer?
hard to tell, but it seems to be .7 to 1 mm thick (by running fingertips across transition). even harder to tell by eye. but almost sure it's not only a print.
found a staytrem 9.5" bridge (neck seems to be 9.5"?) and a vintage trem (with staytrem arm/collet)
both necks waiting patiently
an update in 30 mins. will re-string wit 11s and try out both necks

Re: NGD: 50s SQ CV JM
the musikraft neck it is.
squier neck feels much better after treatment, and I swapped both around several times, but MK neck is the winner. I mean, it cost more than the whole guitar

Re: NGD: 50s SQ CV JM
Squier neck about to begin being tasty
it's quite nice, I'll let it soak up whatever oils needed, patience is key. In the meantime, I'll polish frets further. They're fine as as they are, but we can always take stuff a little further (reminder: only for playability, not for hype). I happen to like those 'tall-narrow' frets, they seem to be some kind of 6105-variant. I might dress them down 1 few hundred millimeters and invest an insane amount of time until they feel just right. Polish them up again, and maybe try and live with some kind of new fretboard wood (laurel? whatever), but make it as playable as can possibly be. Super Kudos to the Indonesian factory workers: fret job was super super nice!

I'm considering blonde as next. This is insane build quality at a mere 400.

Re: NGD: 50s SQ CV JM
So the MK neck is on there, dropped the Staytrem, only tightened screws: setup is close to perfect without any further ado. I didn't even have to take a hex key to the bridge posts. Shit fits. I swapped necks and bridges and didn't even have to search for one of my gazillion hex keys. She plays smoothly, and tomorrow a relaxed setup. of course, the neck swap was insane, but I'm a real spoilt one. Original neck was smooth, frets were perfect for a 400 bucks guitar, this is insane value. I was expecting to bring bad news, but this is insane value. OMFG please forgive me for excessive use of the 'insanity' whatever. this is a frigging solid guitar, and I intend to keep it. Swapping necks and trem was a luxury, but I think I'd kept ze guitah even if I had no upgrades lying around.
my suggestion: buy it if you need it, but be aware of offset quirks (e.g., possibly new ones you 've never heard about: 'drrrrrr' on the trem)
on the other hand: I won't let her go. possibly the neck (taken good care of) or some hardware.
whatever,
peace and such
