That looks great! Congrats Maggie. It looks like the neck has some flame in it. Score! How close is Tidepool to LPB. Looks pretty close on my screen.

I do not have one of these....
But from flats on jazz basses, vi’s and all the other guitars I’ve owned and own, there are no pros for rounds.

I switched to flats almost 20yrs ago now and I don’t miss rounds...
Once every few years I’ll get a set of rounds for fun and to see if I like them again. Needless to say j always go back to flats before the rounds wear.

I think the only pro, if you like it, is the brighter sound of rounds.

String it in flats and don’t look back is my vote!

I’m no expert, but the round wounds didn’t stay on mine for long. I always had the tone backed off to tame them. I went for d’Addario chromes flats on mine, which I understand to be a bit brighter and livelier than some flats. They are bright enough when I want it, and nice and thumpy on the P pickup when I want that. And they feel much nicer too.

Oh, and sorry if this is common knowledge, but be sure to get the right length strings - I’ve seen some medium scale length ones advertised for Mustang basses, but that’s for the through-body strung vintage type, not the top loader on these. My strings are ECB81S 45-100s.

I'm thinking that the folks who like roundwounds are funk players.

I've used GHS Pressurewounds for 21 years. They're smoother than roundwound because the winds are oval. Nice mid-range bump that works well on Fenders. There's a magic spot when I roll off the J pickup 10%. They also, like flats, last forever. The set on my P-Bass Special has been on since 2003.

I also have a short scale Ibanez I got specifically to have a flatwound-strung bass. It is wonderful to have. You couldn't go wrong with flats, that's for sure.
I'm sure some Fender dealer in '64 looked at the new Duo-Sonic II and thought, "That's not a Duo-Sonic. That's a Mustang".

Interesting. So based on that pic, it looks like the "burst" on the Dark Night finish is a bit darker than LPB. Thanks again for the grat color comparison pics.

No worries. Yes, the burst is certainly a deeper & darker blue than the Meteora. I was surprised by that.

I have one with the Maple fingerboard. I changed the stock strings for GHS Precision flatwound strings. Not as much clarity as the roundwounds but I find the playability is much improved. I think it needs a blend pot or the jack socket moving to accommodate individual volume controls.

I went for a blend pot on mine - much prefer it to the the three-way switch.
