Just an observation on the new sonic blue model. Are they using the correct sonic blue (i.e. did the originals have Fender Japans interpretation of sonic blue, which was much like daphne). Seems pale to me, like the actual sonic blue outside of Fender Japan!

I've never had a jagstang, just going off Kurt's sonic blue mustang, which was the deeper blue.

You’re right, the Fender Mexico sonic blue is more pale compared to the Fender Japan sonic blue.

I own a MiM Vintera Jag, the MiM s Jag-Stang and the KC Mustang, all in sonic blue. While the MiM guitars have an identical shade of SB, the KC Mustang is much deeper. And I don’t think the KC Mustang SB aged that quickly during the last 8 or 9 years :)

Yes fender Japan's sonic blue is not really sonic blue.it's also not daphne as it is slightly greener than daphme. Fender Japan sonic blue is almost a kind of aqua or light turquoise.
Sonic blue in the USA I like to refer to as "toothpaste" blue. No green in it, and a kind of blue-white.

I think the japan sonic blue might be my favourite of them all. I had one of those cobain mustangs in sonic blue, shouldn't have let that one go.

If they've indeed used the wrong blue for this model, it's a lazy reissue. Colour shouldn't usually matter this much, but when you're asking people to pay over £1000 for something very specific it's got to be right.

Main cosmetic differences that I've noticed so far between MIM and older Japanese jagstangs

1.) MIM has better shaped pickguard at lower horn.
2.) MIM is lighter blue than MIJ / CIJ
3.) MIM has F stamped neckplate. MIJ / CIJ has blank neckplate
4.) MIM has sunken 3-ways switches similar to Cobain Mustang (to better stay out of the way when playing).
5.) MIJ / CIJ has superior workmanship on fretboard edges / fret edges. MIM has rough fretboard edges.
6.) MIM comes with a gig bag. Believe that Japanese ones came naked.
7.) MIM has a slightly changed font on "Jag-Stang" portion of decal.
8.) MIM has a slightly different control plate shape.
Overall feel is same as the older jagstangs.

Bought a discounted MIM sonic blue for a project couple weeks ago, but decided not to rip apart.

Iirc the second batch of mijs from 2008 had the USA style toothpaste sonic blue.

I mean if we're being technical, I think Kurt really wanted aged daphne. His original drawing said "aqua blue green(like old mustangs). He's referring to the greening and darkening of old daphme mustangs. At least I think so *shrug*

Yep, if you browse through a couple of YouTube videos, there is a wide variety of sonic blue shades across the MIJ/CIJ Jag-Stangs. From almost greenish ones to really toothpaste blue ones like the MIM Jag-Stangs.

Btw how does the stock MIM humbucker sound like compared to the MIJ/CIJ one?

Being even more pedantic, weren't the original Mustangs only ever referred to as red/white/blue, with Daphne blue / Dakota red etc. only ever specified on reissues?

On top of that, I think the label on Kurt's sketch is pretty ambiguous - we have no real way of knowing if he meant a very saturated Japanese sonic blue like his old Mustangs, a very pale green like yellowed old MiA Mustangs, or anything in between. In any case, I think it's cool that there's a wide spectrum of Jag-stang blues. It makes each one a little more individual. Funny that the fiesta reds (that I've seen, at least) all seem pretty uniform when the blues vary as much as they do.

I'm fairly certain that Kurt meant the vaguely greened color that Daphne Mustangs turned over time. The Mustang he played in the In Bloom video (but never gigged?) would have been the model for that:
