NGD IBM AVRI62 JM 2003 *landed!* fresh pics inside

Post by JSett » Tue May 11, 2021 9:14 pm

Scored this slightly beat-up 2001 (see page 2, turns out it's 2003) AVRI last night for a good price (for the current market) and only a half hours drive away. No case unfortunately. It looks like it's had a rough-ish life from the close-up shots I've seen but mostly complete and still looks good...

I have a real soft spot for the Fender metallic finishes so this is definitely in my zone. Looks like the only issues are some bumps and scrapes, cracked pickguard and a missing vibrato arm (and the missing case). Oh, and those horrible straplock buttons :-X

Going to pick it up tomorrow morning, take it home, and give it a thorough going over. Immediate plans are: swap over the pickguard with a spare tort one I have in stock already, check all the electronics, clean it all up properly, swap back to traditional strap buttons and pop a Mustang bridge on. Then just give it all a good setup and see where we're at. I have a spare AVRI62 case here already as my AV65 came (used) in the wrong one so worrying about keeping that with that guitar for the 'originality' is moot - plus it's modded to hell so almost unsellable.

Not even sure if I'll keep it but, the way the market is going on guitars at the moment, passing up a rare-ish colour AVRI at below market value and so close to home would have been silly to do. So it's coming home :D

Will update with my own pictures when it's back in Offset Lodge (my spare room)

Looks great - one of my favourite colours too (I had Rexter make me a tele body in aged IBM).

Maybe it's just me, but I do find it funny that a twenty year old guitar that's clearly had a lively rough and tumble life with plenty of scrapes still has the little CE sticker intact on the neck plate! I peel all that stuff off and soon as I get a new guitar. Just me....?

I thought exactly that too 🤣 who even leaves those things on?? Maybe at this stage it's nearly a modern vintage so I should leave it there for posterity

We'll see when it arrives but, if it doesn't offer much different than what I've already got in the stable then it'll likely get moved on after a quick refurb. I have a spare tort and parchment guard that I'll swap on to replace the broken stock one so it'll have a face-lift.

If it does, I'll put it up for sale here on OSG for what it owes me.

That looks great. I feel like the current iteration of ice blue metallic fender is mixing these days is a bit bluer than this guitar. A fine look to be sure.

Went and collected this this morning, from a thoroughly nice chap. He didnt have the case or vibrato arm or anything as expected from the listing but those are easily sorted. So here are the pictures. The Ice Blue Metallic has yellowed a fair bit which was hard to capture on a phone. The first picture is the closest I could snap that was like it is in the flesh...

I paid £1400 for it, considering the condition and missing case I think, in todays climate, thats a good price. AVRIs in interesting colours seem to be changing hands for 1800-1900 in the UK at the moment (which I think is a little crazy)

Congrats! IBM looks awesome on the Jazzmaster. I had a IBM '62RI Jag that I foolishly let go years ago. Very nice! Enjoy! 8)

Gorgeous! :?
The IBM almost has a greener tint to it in this picture. I love the blue colours from Fender when they've yellowed..
Maybe my IBM Vintera JM might look like that one day.
May the Fuzz be with you

It's yellowed enough that you'd think it was a green guitar, not a blue/grey one. I might hang it in the window of the house to encourage it :D

That’s awesome, almost reminds me of Firemist Silver with that greenish tint. I recently paid 1250 for a Rexter refinned Fiesta Red 2000 AVRI, similar to you, just the guitar and trem arm, no case or anything else. It was a bit painful to spend so much, and I’m not sure if the refin adds or detracts from the value but, apart from the price (and the weight - 8.5lbs) I’m pretty happy with it, my biggest surprise was the pickups, I’d read that people don’t seem keen in them, but I really like them.

Do you mind me asking how you found it? I tend to watch ebay, Gumtree, Reverb and sometimes FB marketplace in the Uk but I didn’t spot this one, where was it listed?

Anyhow, enjoy!

I think any refin makes most people think they're worth less. There'll always be extra value to a factory finish I think. I paid 1400 for a good quality AV65 in Aztec Gold with all the trimmings about 3 or 4 years ago (I think) and used guitar prices have gone up a wild amount in the last 18 months.

In answer to your question, I got it on Reverb. I think it had been online for less than a minute to be honest as I accidentally refreshed on a search and it just appeared - sheer luck really. This one is almost exactly 8.5lbs too fwiw.
