NGD: Wildwood Thin Skin '59 Reissue Jazzmaster

Post by rbrcbr » Tue May 11, 2021 11:17 am

It's been almost 2 years since I owned a Jazzmaster (aside from a brief 2 weeks stint with a TM JM), which has been entirely too long - and damn it feels good to be back. Managed to sort out a decent deal outside of Reverb for this one and I am so happy I caught it in time. The market has been insane lately and it's felt like any good USA Jazzmaster has basically become unattainable. I must admit, I am partial to matching headstock offsets and still regret not getting my hands on a CFM or OTM '65 Thin Skin, but I'm a sucker for a good gold guard with a blonde finish. I feel like I haven't seen many of these here on OSG either, surprisingly. I guess they weren't selling super well prior to COVID either, so maybe that's it.

This thing is basically brand new. It's even got the foam wrapping on the case handle and the caution tag re: temperature changes when receiving your new guitar. The guy who sold it to me had a bunch of other guitars and I guess this one didn't get more than a couple hours of play time and then sat in the case for a while.

This thing is light too - the previous owner weighed it right around 7 lbs 10 oz. Very stoked about that. The neck on it is basically perfect for me - .84 at the first fret, .89 at the 12th fret. Very much a medium C neck. Not sure what the fret specs are on these but I really like them as well. I can't wait to wear this thing in and for the finish to yellow a bit. Feels like I made a good choice. I've got a Mastery on deck, and will probably switch out the tele style knobs for some strat style/59 spec knobs. While the pickups in it sound pretty good, I'm really curious about the Lollar Black Bobbin set, may give those a shot here soon.

I'll admit to kicking myself for not getting one of these 1. when they first came out, 2. when they were discontinued and some used ones were around, 3. when I've seen a small handful on reverb over the years, 4. when they did another reissue, 5. there were a couple on reverb recently. 6. When you posted pics of yours. Congratulations. Total dream guitar there.

Stunning. One like this is on my list. One day, or if not at least I'll have a partsmaster made just to these specs (ok matbe 7.25 radius) . Happy NGD!

Blonde looks so good with the gold guard. One of the best styles for a Jazzmaster IMHO.

Is that the one with the tall Frets? I almost bought one as it is a beautiful Guitar but couldn’t handle the Frets....

In any case Congrats on your NGD & Enjoy!

Hahaha I know the feeling, I was itching for one of the 2008 models for a long time. Surprisingly enough I kind of ignored these when they came out. Very happy with it so far.

Thanks everyone! Anybody have a clue where I can get jazzmaster knobs that are for solid shaft pots? My strat knobs don't fit. Also curious if anyone is aware if these have an angled neck pocket like the AV65s?

Yeah, I think these are the tall frets, 6105s? Def a bit of a change from vintage models but I had em on a partcaster and really liked em so it's worked out so far. Just need to get this set up right with the Mastery.
