I ordered an LPB one from Thomann yesterday and see today it’s sold out. I was just in time

Honestly BoringPostcards's got the right of it -- el cheapo basswood like you find in a budget guitar is pretty ratty, but so is any wood at that price point.

The really nice basswood like Ibanez/Fujigen and Fender Japan use is about as sturdy as alder, and weighs about as much as a lighter piece of swamp ash, which is great for bigger-bodied guitars. I'll take ash or pine for a clear finish, mostly for the more interesting grain, but other than visuals there's really no downside as long as the wood itself is good quality.
I have had ibanez guitars made from basswood. rg570 and up, plus a couple japan fenders and japan mosrites. basswood has dented easily on every single basswood guitar i've owned. permanently turned off of it.

I’ve owned more than a few basswood Fenders and have never noticed that they dent any more easily than alder.

Are these worth the 50% price premium over the Vintera Jaguar?
Vintera series is a SLAM DUNK. Vintera strat is one of my favorites and the olympic white vintera jazzmaster is great. It's probably not worth the extra dough if you like OTM or 3TS for finishes.

The LBP and matching headstock was worth it for me, but I had a vision of what I wanted and had to mod it quite a bit to get it there. I do like the neck on the Japanese LBP a lot more than the Vintera though.
Hi snarf - you've said you like the neck, is it really chunky? I have fairly small hands and have never played a U neck before.... getting purchase stress

x2! I thought I wasn't as finicky about short-scale necks until I played an Original 60's... that was chunky. Wouldn't order an unknown model blind.

Would you mind saying how the pickups sound when it arrives? I'm wondering how close they are to AV/PV65s.

It’s my first jaguar, so I’m afraid I don’t know. I find them pretty low output but very clear if that helps at all….

Haha! Where did you find one? I’m really impressed with how well made mine is.

I don’t mind basswood at all… it sounds good and keeps the weight down, and I don’t notice it denting easy-enough to care about… but screw holes do strip out much easier…

GAK in Brighton have one reserved for me. They seem to have the best price on these things too. I saw one on Gas Station for nearly £1500!

So, it arrived yesterday and I'm absolutely stunned by the quality. I have an MIJ Jazzmaster from '93 which is about the same standard as a high end MIM (which I'd say is high quality) but this is pretty much on a par with my AV65 JM: the fretwork's smooth, the action and intonation are spot on, the finish is very good indeed, and it's an utterly beautiful thing to look at - the colour changes from teal to turquoise to navy as the light changes. The pickups are also of a notably higher quality than traditional MIJ ones, as are the electrics and switches in general. The neck is also fantastic - a really solid palmful that gives the guitar that authoritative feel you get with the AV65s.

The only differences I can tell are that the trem unit, although smooth and stable, does clank a bit, the tuners are less highly geared than the US model, and the pearloid dots are not quite as detailed as the AV65. It also comes with 9 gauge strings, which is a bit odd and out of keeping with the attention to detail elsewhere.

Overall, it sounds, feels and looks like a lifetime keeper of a guitar so thank you for the heads up. It's also a very limited run so, if anyone else wants one, I'd get on it soon as...

Glad you’re happy with it! I can’t put mine down :) are you going to change anything with it? I don’t think it needs it (except new strings of course)

I'm absolutely over the moon with it! I love my '93 MIJ Jazzmaster but this is a real leap forward - like they're repositioned themselves in response to the increased quality of top-end MIM guitars. Beautiful machine!
