Is this legit? - AVRI 62 Jag Ocean Turquoise Metallic Refin
Hello, angry dads!!
Me and a friend of mine came across this ad for a refinished AVRI 62 Jag. At first we were surprised because we don't come across those very often here in Brazil.
Anyways, we started to look for anything shady, just to make sure it was legit.
- At first it was listed as a guitar from 91 - AVRIs first run was in 99 right? We asked the seller and he said we were right, that he checked the manual and changed the description.
- Plastics and chrome look kinda cheap. Can't tell if they were polished.
For some reason, it looks like a Japanese Jaguar, but I don't know. I've never seen an AVRI in person before. Opinions??

The pickguard at the top, near the top control plate, is an AWFUL fit. Doesn't look right to me
*edit* Just read the description on the listing and it says the pickguard is aftermarket, so that figures.
Decal is a weird colour, looks like the blue has been sprayed over the top (maybe translucent paint? That'd be weird though).
Would be nice to be able to read that serial number too, it looks a little like V198129 which is 1991 or 2001. See if you can ask him what that actually says then pump it into this:

difficult to tell, except for the refinish it looks legit. pictures from the neck pocket and neck heel would by nice.
What about the case? the avri‘s i saw always came in a brown case with yellow/orange inside?!

Differences include (from memory)
The dots on the side of the neck bisect the maple and rosewood on an avri but are just in the rosewood on a cij
Wires are thicker and pots are bigger on an avri
Pick guard is deeper
The heel of the neck should be dated usually on an avri
No serial number on the neck of an avri
No serial number on the neck plate of a cij
No mute on a cij
Black logo surrounded by gold on a cij; gold surrounded by black on avri
Those are the obvious differences I can remember. Obviously it’s hard to tell from these photos. Ask for one of the side of the neck. Also if it’s a refin check if the poly undercoat was stripped or left. It’ll sound better if it was stripped properly.
Allegedly.

The missing string mute is suspicious

It’s in the case. Looks ‘ok’ from the photos, though the OTM used on (factory finished) AVRIs is a little greener and darker. Pickguard is awful as already mentioned.

Could this be a Vintera 60s Jaguar with a particularly nice/well oiled pau ferro board and a bogus neckplate?

That's exactly what I thought at first. The shade of OTM is near exact. That board looks way to dark to be Pau Ferro, although an oil job can be convincing.maaaaaaaaaaark wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 5:25 amCould this be a Vintera 60s Jaguar with a particularly nice/well oiled pau ferro board and a bogus neckplate?

You could ask them if there is a hole in the body for the mute. Only the AVRI jags would have the mute hole.

It looks more like the shade of the AO Jazzmaster. Link from the guitar family thread to a page with a pic of my AO JM and my vintera Jag side by side. The Jag is considerably darker/greener.

Probably a good way to check the body. The other part would be the neck pocket and neck heel and front to see if it is stamped.
