Thinking of ordering a Fender mod shop Jag!

Post by gutter rock » Thu Apr 29, 2021 8:45 pm

I keep lusting after a charcoal frost Jaguar. Up until recently it was Sherwood green, but the charcoal might have won me over. I just hope Fender’s newest version of CFM is one that has that slight bluish tint to it. Will have to part with one of my other Jags to pay for it. I know the mod shop jag is basically an American Pro model, but I will opt for the 62 pickups instead of the V-mods. I actually like that it will give me a screw in arm, series position, 4 way switch and phase switch because it is different from my other normal jags. Anyone able to talk me out of this? Any mod shop thoughts?

I’ve been missing in action around here for awhile, good to see the board is still active, and my wallet hates that I’m back!

Well, consider that you could probably save a buck by getting an AmPro and swapping out parts.

Then consider whether the added cost (which is about $300 extra on the Mod Shop vs. a brand-new non-CFM AmPro) is worth the hassle of the pickup swap and not getting the finish you want -- or worse, thinking the finish isn't a dealbreaker then spending extra on top to get a refin.

Yeah it's no steal of a deal or anything, but pricing on the Mod Shop stuff is generally pretty fair (considering that this is all stuff that needs to get pulled from the regular production line, which slows the whole thing down, and that they're tossing a little on top for better margins and as a pain-in-the-ass tax for the folks who really want something with the pickups and color combo they want but can't/don't want to shell out for a CS model.

Ha, on this forum? Not likely.

I think the consensus is if you factor in the cost of a factory-grade refin and the pickup swap, it's really not that bad. I'd go for it if I was in that position.

I think I’m gonna do it. I don’t know how long Fender will have a Jag as a mod shop option and I don’t see them releasing a USA charcoal frost jag anytime soon. Plus, my AV65 Jag should pay for it if I can convince myself to sell it. I love it, but honestly I do prefer 9.5 radius necks and I have a 50th anniversary Jag and a Squier CV Jag as well so I don’t really know if the AV65 brings anything to the table for me other than being extremely well made and it is apparently highly desired now. Only thing is... my AV65 jag is ice blue with matching headstock and that makes it hard to say goodbye!!!!

I just got a Mod Shop Jag in Sherwood Green with the vintage style pickups, so I'm not going to talk you out of anything lol.

If you buy the Fender Play 1-year thing with it, you get 10% off on the guitar, which is worth a lot more than the cost of the subscription.

Maybe you could mod one of your current jags opposed to selling to buy man? Maybe the CV, have it refinished and change out the parts.

Nice! I think I may need some pics of this Sherwood jag of yours! Then again, maybe not.. I think my mind is set on charcoal frost and I don’t need Sherwood pics making me have second thoughts! How do the vintage style pickups sound with the series and out of phase options?

I’ve thought about that. In fact, it is the main reason I bought the CV. That was the plan. But if I’m honest, I can get big money for my AV65 right now and I just don’t play it enough because most of my playing is in a non temperature controlled garage or practice space in a sketchy area downtown. Also, I have kinda burnt out on Ice Blue Metallic. That’s weird for me because it was always one of my favorites. I know it’s just a color, but it doesn’t blow me away the way it used to when I pull it out of the case.

I think you'd be mad to sell the AV65, just sell the Squier and the funds from that plus the 10% off Fender Play deal thing should mitigate most of the cost.

I've been curious about the Mod Shop, too. For all the options it does seem like a reasonably good deal. A concern I have, though, is weight. I've become extremely picky about that. What luck have those of you who have ordered had in getting a decent weight finished guitar?

I’d go for it... But, I wouldn’t sell my AV65 Jag to do it... I’d sell some of my other Guitars first. IMO the AV65’s are the best except for real vintage 60’s Jags.....

Umm, a mod shop Jag is $2000. That Squier won’t get me anywhere close to it.

Not sure why I thought a Mod Shop guitar was closer to a thousand dollars, must've gotten confused with the original AM Pro line pricing.

I still think an IBM AV65 Jaguar is more unique and worth hanging onto over a Mod shop guitar.

I won't be much help, but I think a Charcoal Frost Mod Shop Jag with AVRI 62 pickups would be pretty sweet! IIRC, don't you have AV65 pickups in your 50th Anni?

And btw, welcome back!
