When do you think Fender will release the next new Jaguar model?

Post by figgypudding18 » Sun Mar 21, 2021 5:15 am

Hi All,

Looking at potentially adding a Jag to my AmPro Jazzmaster in the near future. Currently looking at a used AmPro Jaguar, or possibly the American Original 60's Jaguar. Might be nice to have a rhythm circuit since I don't have one on my JM, but...have heard a new bridge is necessary for the AO jag so that puts me off a little.

I was disappointed Fender dropped the Jaguar from the professional II line. Does anybody have any ideas/theories of when they will release any new and interesting Jaguar models, or re-introducing the AmPro jaguars?

Thanks everyone!

Maybe I lack imagination, but I'm having a hard time seeing a gap in their current line of Jags. They make both a fairly traditional and a modernized Jag in the Vintera line, a simplified version in the Player line, and the American Original for a US-made traditional model. Then there's the Classic Vibe Squier and the Contemporary one as well.

The only thing that strikes me as obviously missing is a 7.25"-radius US model, and/or something at the American Performer price point. But the Vinteras are already so expensive that I hardly see the point. And an American Performer Jag would likely be so similar to the Mustang as to make the whole endeavor a waste of time.

A lot of what Fender has been doing lately has been getting customers to accept the idea of Mexican-made guitars as "higher end" and worth higher and higher prices. The AmPerformer series in particular seems destined to give way to this. And the difference in price between AmPro and AmOriginal is not huge.

I don't have any theories, but I was puzzled by Fender having the Am Pro model and the Johnny Marr versions, as the Marrguar is pretty much designed to be the updated professional version of the Jag already and he pretty much nailed it. I picked up an AV65 over the lockdown and couldn't be happier. Considering doing the Series mod, but that's the only thing I'd change on it. I've got a Staytrem bridge on it at the moment, but that's only because I already had one on my Squier VM Jag and swapped the bridges around to see if I noticed a difference (I didn't). The stock one is fine. Just watch a good setup video to see how the whole bridge/trem system is meant to work. I'll probably swap them back when I'm next changing strings, though that might be a while as I've got flatwound 11s on it.

It could be that Fender are preparing for the 50th anniversary of the FenderJaguar.
As it was introduced in 1962 that would be next year (2022).

small typo -- you meant 60th.

They did release a 50th anniversary model that was more or less a Classic Player but made in the US.

OP: I think the current lineup has a Jaguar for almost any one. What are you looking for?

I imagine we will get some cool finishes with B&B and matching headstocks for the 60th anniversary runs. I would like if they did a filtertron-equipped 60th anny jag, as they did with the JM, but not holding my breath.

I’ve been in the offset true believer stage of guitar playing and fandom for going on 10 years and the thing I’ve been hoping and talking about most would be a 1966 reissue, for both Jaguars and Jazzmasters.

A couple not-totally-accurate MIJ versions, those 50th anniversary Jazzmasters, the TVL, and the Classic Vibe 70s Jag... having all those is better than having none with b&b necks, but none of them have been spot on. I think it kinda shows the gap in popular support between offsets and fender’s other main offerings that they only have a single model reissue for the Jazzmaster and Jaguar, while the Strat has what, like 3/4 American Original variants and the Tele has 2/3? The AO60s offsets are laughably close to what I’d expect out of a 66 (seriously only like block inlays and maybe a different decal?) but they haven’t done it yet obviously. It’s mentioned up thread that the AP Jaguar was discontinued, sadly, but that’s another billet point in the rundown of where the model stands right now.

I’ve seen responses saying that while yeah, there were significant aesthetic changes in the transition years, the surf fad had kinda died and there aren’t a lot of iconic players known for explicitly using CBS Jaguars and Jazzmasters. Compare that to a 50s strat with Buddy Holly or early CBS deals for Hendrix, etc. and that sounds like a valid point. Still, other than a legit Marauder that wasn’t sold at Custom Shop prices, a 66 Jaguar is my dream guitar and most coveted reissue.

Having said that, I have zero clue what they’re up to like everyone else but other stuff that would be cool to see:

- Courtney Barnett Signature
- Belinda Butcher Mustang thing (so close to a Jag so I’m including it, along with a Shields signature Jazzmaster)
- Tom Verlaine Jaguar - the lipstick deal
- Kim Gordon signature Jaguar - the red one with the Humbuckers in the bridge she played all the time around/after Murray Street
- Oliver Ackerman Jaguar

I’m racking my brain trying to think of more and even most of those are a stretch, so it’s dawning on me how far down the line the Jaguar is and always was as a choice for famous guitarists. In the Mascis episode of Guitar Moves they mention how nerdy of a choice the Jazzmaster was in the punk/DIY scene they came up in, but Jaguars were less looked down on so it’s funny that the Jazzmaster has sort of become THE guitar in that realm and Jags seem to be relegated to a lesser status.

I’m hoping Fender collaborates with Ibanez to produce something like this:

(And yes, that was done by finger on ipad)

Of course you are correct. it would be the 60th anniversary.
I do remember the 50th anniversary model. B+B necks and BBM, LPB, CAR colours.

Also agree with you that the current range of Jaguars have enough variations to suit everyone.
May the Fuzz be with you

I think current production constraints are going to keep Fender focused only on the best selling models for the time being. Jaguars have always been more of a niche guitar to begin with. 2020 was a record setting year for guitar sales and it looks like 2021 is more of the same. They can't make enough guitars. Apparently the wait for an AO is like 8 months if it's not already in stock. Dealers are having to submit their orders for December right now if they even want to get anything. It's nuts.

I really don't see Fender launching anything that wasn't already in development pre-pandemic at this point.

I watch the youtube channel for Casino Guitars who are a Fender dealer in North Carolina. They've been talking about this stuff pretty regularly for months. They said in like January that Fender wanted their dealers to submit their orders for 3rd and 4th quarter 2021 already. They made a comment on another recent video that an AO that's not already in the dealer system would take about 6-8 months. They signed a dealer contract with Gibson in January 2020 and they still haven't received a single Gibson guitar yet. This is the reality of the current guitar market. 2020 was a record shattering year for sales of guitars and apparently 2021 hasn't slowed at all. The manufacturers can't make enough guitars to fill the demand.

I'm in Canada - you cannot find an AO Jazzmaster right now. There might be less than a handfull available for sale in the entire country.
