I have an upcoming Mustang based project and last week the control plate I ordered was delivered. After taking a closer look at it this afternoon, it ended up going in the trash. Oh well, better to find out now.

You could have at least fashioned it into a bottle opener!

Oh great, now I have to buy a new screwed up Mustang plate so I can repurpose it. A bottle opener is a good idea though.

Are you sure it isn't just mounted at a slightly different angle? I agree the end appears to be tapering away from the body more sharply, but I'm not really sure the control plate itself looks any different. I'd be curious to see an original and a new one on top of each other for comparison.

seems like the american performer mustang is less wonky - no?

I really want one of these - but now?

The screw holes more or less line up the same but the shape is entirely different.
I did have the two at one stage and was going to trace them but I never got around to it.

The control plates on the American performers are the correct design.

Okay then, now that we can no longer look our various Mustangs in the face, has anyone swapped out a wonky plate for a nice one?

Which Fender/aftermarket ones are ok, and will they swap straight onto new MIM and MIA stings?
