Mustang control plate shape complaining!

Post by CROSS_guitars » Thu Sep 17, 2020 1:07 am

I have been whinging about this a bit on these forums and no one else seems to be bothered by it.
Or even seem to have noticed it, have you?
It doesn't line up with the body whatsever and it's annoying!
But more and more reissue Mustangs are coming out with these misshaped control plates.

They first started appearing on the Fender Offset series Mustangs.

Now they are appearing on the new Squier Cyclone's and Japanese Reissue Mustangs.

It's strange because they used the correct design on the Squier Mustang Bullets, which is the cheapest Mustang available.

Looks skinnier? Maybe to cheapen up the amount of metal used?

Pointier. Look at the rounded end, the width's taper is more dramatic on the new one, moving away from the edge of the body while the pickguard end is the same as the correct plate. It's quite obvious around the jack: it becomes off-centered.

It's partly why I use a one-piece guard on my Mustang, it distracts the attention. :D

It would be the exact same amount of metal.

Here it is on the Vintera Mustang.

You can see the top curved bit around the top is far too curvy.

Original 65 Mustang on the left, reissue offset mustang on the right.
You can see the 65 control plate lines up perfectly with the body, whereas the
offset mustang on the right is wonky.

I hadn't paid much attention to the newer Mustangs and never noticed it, but now I can't un-see it. The area along the body outline, by the volume knob is particularly offensive.

Yep.

I was really happy with my Vintera Mustang. Now it's firewood.

They probably got a great deal on AliExpress.

Yeah, it is really ugly. The bulge at the top then the way it strays from the body line toward the bottom, leading into the overly pointy end. It looks like a big misshapen troll's nose.

My only modern Mustang is a Bullet, so I never noticed this. Interesting.

I'm happy with my vintage and Bullet plates, at least.
