Why is a mute on a Jazzmaster such a rare sight?

I like the mute I just don't like what it does to the action. I put one on my 98 CIJ Jaguar back in 2007 and used it for about a year. I still have the hardware sans-foam in the case, lol. That Jaguar without it is one of the lowest, slickest guitar's Ive seen. No shim, bridge almost decked, and no chocking and very little buzz, and the Japanese whammy is eager to bend and twist notes and keep em' in tune.

I'm planning in the not too distant future to build a sort-of River-Table-Epoxy filled reclaimed pallet wood Jaguar that has the mute, but it's recessed into the body. I miss being able to use that for certain things, and it'd be especially useful with the monophonic synth stuff on my Line6 HD500, but I find it screws with the action too much without being recessed into the body.

This has to be the most extreme example of shim-phobia that I’ve seen on the web.

Guess I need a $3200 Fender limited 70th anniversary edition Jazzmaster in olive puke green touched by a divining rod from Thurson Moore himself with pickups hand wound from David Byrnes pubic hair to a tasty 4.3K ohms....oh and a built in fuzzrite! Dont forget the Fender fishing hat and too much tuna beard to go with it. Meh. Whatever.

Both the recessed mute and the epoxy jag sound like an interesting ideas but damn dude that other post was light riffing at most. I doubt tamerofthebantha meant anything personal by it

I put a mute on my Jazzmaster maybe 25 years ago. I made my own spring plunger since there were no repros around. To make it fit, you need to cut down the "ears" on the bridge pickup to make clearance for the mute between the pickup and bridge. I shimmed the neck too.

I tried several different kinds of foam for the mute (again, at the time there were no reproductions) until I found one that muted decently without throwing the strings sharp.

It's not as effective as palm muting, but if you want a muted fast strumming part, this does the trick. Plus it looks cool as a cucumber!
