NGD: Squier FSR Classic Vibe 60s Jaguar Charcoal Frost Metallic

Post by michel v » Wed Dec 07, 2022 5:53 am

I had a Johnny Marr Jag for a short while a few years ago, but for some reason, it didn't click with me. I decided to give the Jag another try with one of these. Well another two tries really, as I had to return the first one because of some blemishes on the fingerboard.

I had read about the issues these models can have, and sure enough mine did, all fixable though:
- I had to cut the nut slots deeper
- the bridge has a tendency to lower by itself. Teflon tape to the rescue!
- the frets were a bit rough but a bit of polishing took care of that
- the laurel fingerboard looks a lot better after oiling

I feel that the issues were easier to overlook at the prices from a few years ago. Luckily, I like tinkering with my guitars!

Other observations:

Although I have .009 strings on some of my guitars, on this guitar they're too thin for me. I'm going to try different gauges to see what I like best (it has .011s now).

I haven't shimmed the neck (yet?). The bridge is a teensy bit lower than I like, but I think I have enough break angle on the strings.

No noise from the vibrato unit! :w00t:

So, overall, I really like it. It sounds good, it feels good. And the 24" scale feels like cheating!

That's a handsome-ass Jaguar.

I have a '66 CFM refin, and it's amazing how well Squier nailed that vibe. If it plays as good as it looks, that's a keeper right there. Congrats.

Max Guitar in the Netherlands (https://max.guitars/en-eu/). No prior experience with the shop, but the price was reduced, so I took a chance.

A lot of stores have this model and the silver sparkle one. They are a limited edition for Europe (500 copies each). around 430-470e (460-500$)
check Bax Shop, Thomann, Musicstore, etc...

Despite being totally enamored by an inexpensive charcoal frost jag, I gotta keep my pants on for now. I just did the unthinkable and got an inexpensive strat.

Matching headstocks totally make sense on all guitars. It's an accident of history that they aren't standard. Guitars without them look incomplete/wrong.

And yes, if you play 9s on a 25.5" scale guitar, you should play 10s or 11s on a 24" guitar. And the Mustangs and Jags were designed to be used with higher gauge strings, which is why the stock bridges on these are fine if you use the right type of strings and play musical styles that existed when the guitar was developed.

That indeed is a great Jag. I've got both the shell pink and the silver sparkle FSRs. I had to change the awful mint green pickguard on the pink one to dark red pearl though. The charcoal grey would look AMAZING with a black pearl pickguard!

I can see the appeal, but I like the mint pickguard on mine ;). I like the contrast, and it's not too over the top IMHO

You are so lucky. I wish the FSR models would sell in Canadian shops. I’ve missed so many cool guitars from Europe and CME, just because they don’t sell up here.
Bullshit. I want a CFM Jag so bad. It wouldn’t be worth the shipping though, to have one sent over here.

Do you never get any FSR models in Canada?

Almost none of the offset ones. You have to order from the US or UK dealers.

With the weak pound, the UK shops are actually a reasonable source for stuff like this right now. You can actually get most US-made Gibson models from there cheaper than from L&M, even after shipping and duties. Or at least, you could when I checked a couple of months ago.
