If I traded my Competition Mustang necks with each other, it'd be like wearing a mullet.

Black always works IMO. Reverend had a few models with the black headstock / other color bodies and they all look fantastic.

You gave a great idea to fans of relic guitars, hipsters and other guys who want to look cooler then they really are. Probably in future fenders with mismatch headstock will be trendy.

The TVL neck with a tort guard is something I started thinking about as soon a I got a TVL JM. Love that neck, love the B&B, love the headstock finish.

Then I realized that I'm a special type of insane for wanting a guitar with that neck...because I already own a guitar with that neck. But hey, if one is good, then two are even better right? :-[

My Dakota red partsmaster's headstock is a touch lighter than the body though it was more accidental than deliberate.

When I bought my CIJ JM in 2005, it had been staying so long in the shop near a neon light that the headstock had turned from sonic blue to surf green, and it's even greener today!
I must admit that's because of this mismatch that I bought it, wondering if it was a factory mistake or not. :)

Bringing this thread back. Anyone have any more pictures like this? I'm not a huge fan of either of these colors, but there's something I kinda like about this odd combo I just happened across.
Without music, life would be a mistake.

I think black headstocks work great with most body colors, and I prefer no headstock color on my Fendery type things (technically mismatched).

Can't remember who it was, but I remember seeing some builds on Reverb that had the headstock matched to the pickguard, so the body would be Sonic Blue with a pearl guard (for example, I don't remember a specific color combo) and a pearl headstock which looked cool (but a bit much for me). Godin does something similar with their Radium model, but the "pickguard" on that is basically the entire top.

I stuck a Jaguar neck on my Bullet Mustang and was surprised by how much I liked it. Have debated trying a black pickguard on it to match it better, but kinda like it as-is.

That looks gorgeous as it is! The black pickups and knobs match the headstock enough, a black pickguard would be too much I think

My Mory came with a neck that needed lots of work, so as a temporary measure I fitted this neck that was the one part of a parts Strat that I hadn't sold off. It just seems to work, maybe because the headstock ties in with the pickup covers? Not something I'd have planned to do, but it'll probably stay there.

Thanks, my wife has a strong opinion on this and thinks exactly as you do. She's talked me out of a black pickguard once every couple of months.
