Have you done any wet sanding? I would work my way up as high as possible with wet sand paper, and then buff it with a polish of some sort.

glad cooler heads have prevailed. Overspraying would have been a huge mistake. For one thing it would've looked really unnatural-- what old guitar has a clearcoat over dings and dents?
You've made the right decision to skip that.

Re: saving a 1969 comp orange body & neck is GO!!!
Indeed. Had an hour drive home this evening. Thought about the overspray and all I could think of was how much this thing would look like the early fender road worn guitars. Clear over wear. No. Thanks.
I borrowed a super cheap toy-like orbital buffer from a friend of mine. Picked up the compound suggested (thank you fullerplast) and started wet sanding my way up to 2500 after I put the boy to bed (9pm) and after Walking Dead (OMFG!!!!). I didn't do any more sanding to the headstock any i didn't want to sacrifice more decal for a better shine. I hand buffed it and it came out nice. As good as one can get it w/o removing more of the decal.
I hit the body with the orbital after sanding was done. Started on the backside first to get me bearings aaaand nailed it. Came out brilliant. It's not 110% blemish free - durr. It closely resembles the untouched finish on my 77 Tele deluxe. Moved on to the front. Took a little more time and a wee more caution so i didn't remove any more stripe. The black painter removed more clear from the front than the back during their prep. The stripe did wear off a touch more but nothing to freak me out. End result - earmuffs - F*CK ME SHIT HOT AGENT ORANGE! Finished up the sides. Touched up the back a bit. Goddam nailed this thing. Again, it's not perfect but I don't want it to be. This came out way more better than I could have ever imagined. So much that I splurged and picked up a case from eBay I was that stoked.
Now if the neck plate and pickups would hurry their little asses up i could get some sound clips done.
shiny old paint is shiny...

^^ Man, that looks AWESOME, Cody. It's almost like the dude who sprayed it black (God, I hope he was listening to "Paint it Black" at the time) did you a favour by preserving the original finish. Great job, sir!

Re: saving a 1969 comp orange body & neck is GO!!!
cheers fellas. it's killing me sitting at work not being able to mess with this
might pick up a generic neck plate on my way home just to get it together and strung up. still cant wrap my head around the fact i am the owner of an actual original not a reissue 1969 competition mustang, let alone an ORANGE one other than pictures online the only comp-O i've seen was back in 2001 or 2002 at Encore Music in Minneapolis MN. it was rescued from a prison and looked more competition BROWN than orange due to the years and Years and YEARS of smoke and use & abuse by some of Minnesota's finest. dude behind the counter thought it was haunted. by far most epic mustang i've ever encountered.
is it bad that i want a red and a blue one now? naaah. it's natural
here's the case. might not be the exact/correct vintage but it's got character, just like agent orange, and that's what counts

YEP
that's how the fuck you do the damn thing.
Glad to see it come out right.
It's now worth more than you paid for it. All your time and labor were not free-- you've actually been paid back with a cooler and literally more valuable instrument that, if you ever sell it, you'll collect the "paycheck" for your hard work. Rare that you actually get that.
Not a "reconstruction" but a true restoration, in the sense that you have literally restored something most would've thought lost. That ORIGINAL comp orange finish has been brought back from the dead in a most tasteful way.
Very excellent, and well-done!

Re: saving a 1969 comp orange body & neck is GO!!!
kudos mang. i cannot wait to get it assembled COMPLETE and take some good pictures outside to show off the finish. right x infinity.
am very proud of this. my fingers are torn apart from the hours and HOURS of hands-on foolery but i've not complained once. after every step i pulled back and thought to myself holy fuck, that actually worked!
i do wonder what the headstock would have ended up like if it were wet sanded instead of stripped. the world will never know. i'm not upset about it one bit. like i said before it just adds character. a war wound. agent orange has earned it's purple heart... but retirement is NOT in it's immediate future.
agreed that if i resold it i'd get a decent amount and probably more than i've into it. that being said, WHO WANTS IT?!?!?!
KIDDING!!!!! this one is staying with me to the end. it's in my 'inner circle' and going nowhere unless total financial failure is imminent. and even then i doubt i'd let go of certain 'items'.
