62 Bass VI...Finally!

Post by bulrich » Thu Nov 29, 2007 8:59 pm

Just picked up a 62 Bass Vi off Ebay which has a non original neck and stripped finish.
Why? I can't tell you. I want to restore it. I tried to tell myself restoring it (and the bass) will cost more than just buying a new CS one but I couldn't see it pass by. Plus I love the feel of the 62's.

So I'm wondering if anyone had any luck buying replacement necks from Fender? I know this is tricky but would be worth it.
(I know I could get a USACG one)

Thinking Firemist Silver.

looks like you'll need a new Bas VI bridge ....  can be purchased from the guy in france.

and maybe a new switch plate and switches .. also can be bought from france
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

dude i'm jealous!  when that one popped up again i was tempted, and you got it at a GREAT price!

a standard jag plate should work, unless he didn't route out the switch plate for those toggles.  the bridge is a mystery, i can't tell from the pics what it is.

did you get the history on that neck?  its probably some custom luthier like the greatful dead guy or something!

Cool. Good luck with it.

Just noticed 4 vintage Bass VIs up at the moment (All way too expensive though...)

the bridge is original, i had the guy send me photos once.  there's a piece of foam or tape applied below the saddles that makes it look smaller like a mustang bridge.

It seems like getting the Jag plate, switches, and trem bar is not problem from Guitar Parts Resource.
The bridge is a Bass VI bridge with a piece of foam behind it.
The real task is going to be the neck. Good thing I'm in no hurry.
Here's a pic he sent:

Actually, I'm the guy with the parts in the US now. The French guy (Chris H) asked me to be his US poc.  That is a sweet looking axe. I'd love to find some pickup rings for the generation one. Anyone know where?

It'll be hard to find original rings.
You could maybe borrow some to make copies. So few of the VI's around that I have never seen one parted out.

62 Bass VI...waterslide decal

Post by guitartist65 » Fri Nov 30, 2007 2:50 pm

I just joined and I must say, This place is incredible. I can't believe there's an actual tutorial on how to make a Bass VI.  One day soon I'd like to tackle it.  I would like to do the artwork for the waterslide decal but I'll need something to work off of.  Any suggestions?  I'll send the graphic to anyone who would like one.

looking at the larger photo, it appears that the bridge is as you say ... ok and also the 3 switch "plate" may even be ok... it looks like the previous owner has used washers to span the original switch batton holes... most likely  all you need is to get some new slider switches, a capacitor and wire it back up.

this is looking better and better.

On the same bit different topic, I have recently ordered two bass VI necks from USCG for a couple of bass VI replicas  (one if for a friend one is for me).  Here are the details and cost exluding shipping

NECK #1
- US-3 Neck - BM/RW, HEEL, 30" x 21 frets*BASS VI*, 1 5/8 nut width *curved*, "C" (.830) contour, 7.25 radius,6230 fretwire, Kluson tuner holes, CLAY/CLAY, drill mtg holes, rolled edges  .... US$265.00

NECK #2
- US-3 Neck - BM/RW, HEEL, 30" x 21 frets *BASS VI*, 1 5/8 nut width *curved*, "C" (.830) contour, 7.25 radius, 6230 fretwire, WhiteMOP FD/Black SD, **BIND NECK CREAM  ....  US$415.00
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

Wow. I actually have a NOS one of those decals from back in the day.
If I actually can get a neck for this thing I could finally use it.

The other funny thing about this VI, is it used to belong to the creator/moderator of the Yahoo Groups Bass VI page. A guy named Jason (Gravity's End) started that site and it's where Alfred and I hooked up with many other VI users. Jason sold the VI in 2001 or so to the guy I bought it from.

The waterslide

Post by guitartist65 » Sat Dec 01, 2007 6:05 am

Scott,  I can reset that waterslide without the gold middle in place so it could be added later since conventional printers can't reproduce the proper gold.  Does that sound good?
