1966 Mustang bass project. DONE!!!! (well, I need a thumb rest..)

Post by Jazzprod » Fri Oct 12, 2007 4:06 am

So, I scored a 1966 Mustang Bass on Ebay with an invaluable help from Doug (Fullerplast).

Thanks Doug

:)

I’d been looking for a bass project for some time when I saw this one… ::)

It’s literally in pieces but it’s all there except for the bridge (the last one went as high as $417 on the ‘bay !!!)*pew*

The body was brush-painted with some wheel silver paint that was like 3mm thick.  :-X

You can imagine the PILE of goo that was taken off the guitar!! It was as big as my fist!

I found silver paint even under the shielding!!!

It seems it had a Dakota red finish from the start, but I found traces of white(over the red!?) and gold also.

Under the red I discovered this stamp:

Image

I don’t know what could have been the “special” with this one; did Fender do factory oversprays and then gave them this stamp?? (Thinking about the gold)

Anyways, the shielding and all the other stuff cleaned up pretty nice,

Image

but I haven’t got to the neck yet. I think it might need a refret. But it has vintage M@J@ I’ll tell you ;-)

A funny thing with the pickguard is that it looks like it has a clear cote:

And some pink discolouration on the back side:

The body had some dings and bruises but turned out well for a refinish.

I’ve just dyed the body yellow and was thinking of not doing it because of the paint residue still on the body. But I did it anyway… :-[

Image

I think I’m going to use a temporary bridge for the time being. The screw holes from the temp. won’t show when I find a original and install it.

It’s a musicmaster bass bridge but it’s a string through so I’ll get that Sustain going  8)

Image

Oh, I thought of making it a IBM but I think it’s going to be a Dakota Red anyway…IF I can get the right aerosol colour that is...

To be continued...

Cheers,
Dan

A very unique project as well!  We certainly don't get many of these in this section.

Sweet.......my daughter plays bass, and I'd love to get her a smaller sized bass someday. I am getting into this project stuff. If my Jag project turns out ok I may try to score her an older bass and restore it.

Good luck!

That would be a butterscotch with a nasty illness of some kind due to the woodfillings I had to make to get it right  ;D

I had a 1968 Jazz bass that I sold to a guy in the Netherlands a few years ago, and I've been missing a bass since.... :(

Yes, the front was like MINT!!! But the back was all scratched up :( It was stored on a garage shelf(?) before I got it, going off and on all the time... :(

(OMG I'm writing this while "rave down" with Svervedriver just came on my stereo...... :?)sorry...I had to...

Just come to think of it - Didn't CAR for a period have gold as base and then red on top - could it have been CAR as original?
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

By the way, what is the scale? 30"? If so, that would be perfect for my daughter. She actually wants a Jaguar Bass, but isn't the scale 34" on those?

Yes I think so, and it was your suggestion... ;)
And a good one.  :D

Regan;
Yes, it's a 30" scale. Don't know the jazz bass scale though... Sorry :(

That jazz bass is unbelievably nice!  :-*

I played a sunburst '65 when I was in London in August, and it was just lovely.
