I’d been looking for a bass project for some time when I saw this one…
It’s literally in pieces but it’s all there except for the bridge (the last one went as high as $417 on the ‘bay !!!)*pew*
The body was brush-painted with some wheel silver paint that was like 3mm thick.
You can imagine the PILE of goo that was taken off the guitar!! It was as big as my fist!
I found silver paint even under the shielding!!!
It seems it had a Dakota red finish from the start, but I found traces of white(over the red!?) and gold also.
Under the red I discovered this stamp:
I don’t know what could have been the “special” with this one; did Fender do factory oversprays and then gave them this stamp?? (Thinking about the gold)
Anyways, the shielding and all the other stuff cleaned up pretty nice,
but I haven’t got to the neck yet. I think it might need a refret. But it has vintage M@J@ I’ll tell you ;-)
A funny thing with the pickguard is that it looks like it has a clear cote:
And some pink discolouration on the back side:
The body had some dings and bruises but turned out well for a refinish.
I’ve just dyed the body yellow and was thinking of not doing it because of the paint residue still on the body. But I did it anyway…
I think I’m going to use a temporary bridge for the time being. The screw holes from the temp. won’t show when I find a original and install it.
It’s a musicmaster bass bridge but it’s a string through so I’ll get that Sustain going
Oh, I thought of making it a IBM but I think it’s going to be a Dakota Red anyway…IF I can get the right aerosol colour that is...
