1962 Jazzmaster "Cinderella" - Better Late Than Never!

Post by dinosaur » Thu Jun 20, 2024 6:35 am

Time certainly does fly. Here's a slightly modded 1962 Jazzmaster that I bought in 2008/2009 with plans to immediately restore, but instead I kept it as is and played it sparingly. I'm finally restoring it and documenting it. The short story is that it was an Ebay listing for a 1967 spray can refin JM that supposedly belonged to one of the guitarists from the 80s rock band Cinderella and was strung up lefty for a while. Pics showed a slab board with 62 neck date and it arrived strung up righty but had the extra strap holes from being used lefty. This is the original thread from back then just for fun, but pretty much all the links are dead now:

I'll repost some of the pics from that first and then make more posts as I make progress.

Here's how it arrived shipped coast to coast in the US in just a gig bag!

The biggest "issue" was the neck - weird, dark varnish-like finish; extra string tree; Schaller tuners; no decal. It really grew on me though as it plays great and is the biggest reason I've procrastinated so much.

As I said, I kept it as is and used it sparingly. Originally I wanted to restore it perfectly, but as the price of vintage JMs kept rising and rising I rather enjoyed having a beater JM that I didn't have to worry about as much. I have other more valuable JMs and honestly sometimes it's a drag not wanting to take them out of the house or even worrying about making sure I put them back in the case after a long night. Finally this year it dawned on me to try and restore this guitar somewhat but not go all out on the neck. So the plan is to sand the body down and spray it a color I like with a matching headstock to cover up the neck finish, and change out the non-original parts where I can. But I'm not going to strip it and send it out for a proper refin that I'll have to be too careful with.

When I disassembled the neck I was surprised to see that the tuner holes are still the vintage 8.8mm and have not been routed to 10mm. I didn't know Schallers came in that size back then. So now instead of leaving them I'm going to just get a set of repro Kluson single lines and relic them slightly to match the other hardware. I didn't think I'd have that option without adapter bushings or proper plug and redrill.
Image

Again since I'm not going for a super proper and perfect finish I'm just sanding down the body to use the white as a primer. For some reason I just couldn't get the thimbles out. I've taken thimbles out many times before using a soldering iron but these just would not budge. Since I'm not being too fussy with this one I just taped them up. I did fill and sand the extra strap hole from being used lefty. I also tried to remove what might be tape in the pickup cavities to see if there was a date under there but it's been too long and it all melted with the paint. Also couldn't get to the possible original sunburst underneath but it might be there for a future endeavor.
Image

For the neck I just filled the extra string tree hole and primed it. The extra tree was super old and rusty, but the screw was more modern. The original tree has the correct half plain shank.
Image

I decided I wanted something close to Shoreline Gold but easier to spray, so I went with Dupli-Color Light Driftwood Metallic. It's coming out great so far and just what I wanted - much more vintage correct but cheap and easy and not perfect.

That's where I am now as of today. I'm just letting the body and neck cure and I have repro Klusons ordered. I think I have all the other parts.

That Driftwood Metallic has a nice faded Inca Silver vibe to it. Great choice. Looks like a great guitar already and it’s going to be killer when the restoration’s finished. Are you keeping the modded switch? Seems like a nice bit of character.

I agree the switch is really unique and functionally makes a lot of sense. I might keep it. I've put this off so long that I have a correct slider switch from an early 60s JM that I bought for $10 back in 2010. But I may just keep it with the guitar for the future.

That's gonna be super pretty. The world needs more silver and gold Jazzmasters!

Are you re-using that split guard (I'd understand, that's a lovely tort!) or ordering a repro?

I'm gonna keep the vintage tort for now. It has the cracks, but it hasn't really shrunk much around the pickups and is still easy to work with compared to others I have. Originally I thought I'd get a Spitfire so I'd feel more comfortable beating it up rather than damaging the original more, but now I want to just keep this cheaper and play it.

Looking good so far. The Cinderella connection is wild if true. Imagine a vintage JM here.

Ha I know! I wish I could remember the transaction better. But it definitely shipped from where they are from in the Philly suburbs.

Are you/did you keep the back of the neck finish in tact?

Yeah, more or less. I did take some steel wool to it a long time ago and now it feels great. It doesn't look vintage correct, but a full proper refinish of the neck is something I want to avoid for now. I'm not sure it would even be possible to get the stain out in a reasonable way in the future.

As long as its nice and playable and not sticky... the before photos it looked questionable. Cool project.

1) I unabashedly love Cinderella

2) In 1983 they did a commercial for a chili dog place in Philly that is worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XOWYe9TgaU

That's fantastic! Thanks for sharing. I'm New Jersey born and raised and love seeing stuff from that general area.

The paint's been curing a little over two weeks now and the neck seemed ready to work on, so I got it done today.

The repro Klusons arrived. Normally I hate aging/relicing parts, but the rest of the hardware on this guitar is so oxidized and cruddy that the new tuners would really stick out terribly. So I aged them with some vinegar fumes for a few hours.

Headstock sanded and polished:

Bushings fit without any issue - big relief after the Schallers were in there. And a decal I got from FenderBob in 2007!

Back of the headstock and neck for those wondering about what the finish looks like as of today:

All in all I'm thrilled so far. The prior dark finish really hid a lot of the dings in the headstock that are now more obvious, and clearly the previous owner's installation of the bushings for the Schallers was less than graceful, but nothing is structural that I can tell and it looks so much better to me. Hopefully I can get the body done this week.
