I think the black guard looks killer on red, so my vote is for Fiesta red or a proper Candy Apple red.

Funny thing is I tend to lean metallic/candy with reds as I tend not to like the non-metallics, but the particular red in the OP with the black guard seems to just work. So, even replicating the original color with a properly done finish would work, but I would probably also lean hard towards CAR.mynameisjonas wrote: ↑Fri Jan 19, 2024 4:38 amI think the black guard looks killer on red, so my vote is for Fiesta red or a proper Candy Apple red.

Re: The time has come... (Poll)
Well, it's obvious that "pick something else" is the winner and I agree.
Here is the color I'm choosing, sort of. I've always loved the shade of CAR on KS's late '59 JM. It's CAR over LPB i believe. I'm thinking a darkened and yellowed CAR over black. No white primer, just black over the natural alder then the Red.
Below the pic of KS's JM is a picture of my friend's work on one of his own guitars. It's a little heavier relic'd than I'd choose but i think it looks great. He hasn't gotten back to me yet. If he doesn't have time to do it I'll figure something else out.

Excellent choice! I always loved that darker red on KS’ JM. I’m partial to vintage tort with that color but black anodized will look amazing as well.

Well, the 59 black anodized guard has a naturally aged lacquer finish on it so it looks really great. My other JM has a similar look with tort. This is the guitar i play out with.Ursa Minor wrote: ↑Fri Jan 19, 2024 1:41 pmExcellent choice! I always loved that darker red on KS’ JM. Great news. My friend will do the refin. It’s been raining here so I haven’t stripped the body yet. Next weekend. I’ll post pics when it’s prepped.

Great choice! I'm sure it will look killer. It reminds me to my 59 which came to me with a very old trans red (wine? burgundish?) finish. Red hues go great with tort, but we all know that
