'72 Musicmaster Bass Refin

Post by Nico » Mon Sep 05, 2022 7:15 pm

This is wayyyy overdue. Got this bass 15+ years ago, it was finished in white over custardy olympic white. The finish was an ugly mess and since I don't play bass much, I never really cared... still, this is my bass and will never part with it. I decided to give it a much needed makeover in Ocean Turquoise. Here's to ongoing project;

For a rattle can job, it's settling pretty flat, so, wetsanding will go fast(ish).... it'll need 2-3 more clear coats but it's a cold and damp day. As you can see in the pics, there's some bumps and knocks that were not levelled but this one is getting a subtle relic treatment anyways. With the slightly yellowed guard, it's already looking snazzy. I'll add nice pics at the end as phone pics colors don't do it justice.

It's really hard to get an accurate color with the phone's camera as it looks pretty much like LPB in some pictures but it's as if LPB had a baby with Sherwood Green, in person. There's a nice emerald effect without being overly green. I really love this color. Looks like an accurate rendition of Fender's OT from the online pics.

The body looks later than '72 to me. The tug bar moves to the bass side of the strings in '73

You might be right, I went from memory in calling it a 72, I need to recheck that serial on the neck plate :)

So, correction, it's a 1975. Thanks for pointing it out.

It's getting there... Wet sanded 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000. Did a rubbing compound and polish. Started really conservative relic'ing to bring up the deeper dings (since I didn't bother filling). Will go a little further with this (some crazing and some more light relic). When I get back home, I'll setup and take proper pics. Can't wait to put her together :)

Wow, nice work! Is it just me or us the gap between the A and D strings a bit larger than the space between the other strings? All in all, great project and result!
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

It wasn't setup when I took the pictures. Since, I removed the overly thick shim in the pocket, tweaked the truss rod, redone the electronics... Now it's all nice and plays like a dream :?
