That’s the shielding in the routs, not finish.

Bursts are not my favorites finishes but ;
1) it's beautiful as is and would be a hard task to make it look as authentic with that used up neck (if you look at what Fender comes up in their custom shop, they often look really wrong in terms of aged/relic finishes, specially the necks, yuk!)
2) if you're looking to resell, down the line, ppl would MUCH more appreciate that old refin (I have my doubts as it looks pretty correct for a Fender finish), than having a new finish on.
Just my opinion.

Upon inspection, I see that I was wrong. I pretty confident that this wouldn't have passed the QC with that red spit all over....
My eyes tell me that it was SB originally and was probably banged up all around so the red and brown were reshot, the aniline and yellowed center look factory.

jvin, you're seeing the brass "tub" shields there. Antigua was actually a white-to-grey burst introduced around 1969-70.
Like Nico I think the finish is likely to be original with a shot of black around the edges to cover up chipping and dings.

Just my thoughts on the guitar, I would get the electronics working and leave as is. It looks great as is, if anything, find a replacement pickguard and do away with the extra switch.

Re: the finish.
If you are fixing it up to sale, you gain nothing in value by refinishing it, IMO. In fact, though I agree with others regarding the finish, there is nonetheless something kind of right about it too. In other words, the totality of it has a vintage look to me. A prospective buyer might find it authentic enough to entice. I'm not saying misrepresent it, but only that I think "pretty nice old refin" is better than "new refin". Let the next buyer do that if he/she wants.
If you are keeping it then do what pleases you, of course. It still doesn't preclude you from moving it later down the road.
I love it as is.

As another poster above said, I think it may be an original burst that was touched up around the edges.
The middle looks very, very right to me in pics (though obviously it’s hard to make an assessment without seeing it in person

Thanks guys, interesting thoughts on potentially only being resprayed around the edges to retouch at some point in its life. It must have happened a long time ago to be sure.
I had a good relationship with my dad! But he left me a few other guitars, mostly sunbursts, so was looking to change it up a little. I think I'll redo the wiring with cloth wire first to get it back to working order, then decide from there.

Im new here, and I have no idea what kind of relationship you had with your father, But I personally wouldnt change a thing. I cant imagine a better keepsake to honor you Dad's memory. I apologize if I'm overstepping my boundaries here...

I'm probably bias since I've got a '65 jaguar with an original burst finish. While it's no show-stopper, it is original so that's where I'd stand on that issue. Seeing as this one looks to be a refin, I'd say let your custom color dreams guide you. I'm bias toward blues, greens or well done inca silver. Just my two cents. Hope you come up with some solid direction on what you want to do with it.

I'm with everyone else that I would want to be very, very sure that is a re-finished guitar otherwise you'll lose thousands of dollars approaching it with a can of spraypaint.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I think even original sunbursts are ugly, so I say go ahead and refinish it ha ha!
