I wonder if this was previously a "Tielman Brothers" style 9-string conversion? Quite common among JMs/Jags from that era, and I can't think of any other reason somebody would paint the backside of the headstock. It covers up additional tuner holes.

"Stripped, re shaped headstock, new decal, non original hard case in poor condition" ...but we still want $4K for it.

For not much more than that, you can still get one without any of the aforementioned selling points.

Yeah I found that pretty funny. It’s a great guitar though I played it a few months ago. It was for sale a few months ago for 5k at a local shop and that seller bought it to sell it for more. I really wanted it

These are the ones that confuse me the most, when the rest of the guitar is untouched and kept in good condition but at some point in it's history someone made one utterly weird and pointless modification

I bet that was modified to a 9 string at some point and the back of the headstock being painted is to hide the repair.
