Original or refin...Does this look ok?

Post by joeybsyc » Fri Mar 12, 2010 6:57 am

Late 60s shortscale fender...supposedly 100% original, reputable seller, and looks ok to me... but Im wondering if a couple other folks could tell me if it looks ok to them just to confirm my thoughts that it's original. I thought I saw a speck of blue in there...maybe not? Normal or questionable? Opinions

looks like the inside of the musicmaster bass I had and that was not a refin., check the pickup cavity.
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

Yeah, look close at the pickup cavity. Is it a Mustang?

it's a musicmaster, I am working on under the pickguard photos, but am pretty convinced it's legit... the hint of blue is what I'm talking about... The seller said he guarantees it's never been messed with, and said i can send it back if i or anyone else thinks differently when viewed in person. In comparing the stick mark and overspray in the pocket, it looks identical to my other mm pocket... i believe it's factory, just wondered if anyones seen another like this... Panoramic says his bass was the same way, anyone else?

my duo sonic was also like that, i think it's primer that aged and got rotten looking, don't mark my words though, go do your own research.

I'm trying to do as much research as I can... The more I look at it the more convinced I am that it's original. The finish has alot of wear, cracks, etc. that correlate with the age of the guitar. It's not a valuable piece, so i kinda doubt anyone would have gone to extremes to refin it with identical Fender processes many years ago. I'm still waiting on pickup cavity pics, but in the meantime I found this pic on Jim Shine's site that shows a OTM finish with similar traces of greenish color in the pocket.

The guy is giving me the right to send it back if i decide it's not original when I see it in person, so I think i'm gonna get it regardless, but I did ask for him to take off the guard and see whats under there first, just for peace of mind.

Good question....no good answer! I love the one I have, I just really never seem to be happy with ONE of anything I like alot, and immediately start looking for another like it. Plus the deal is pretty good...provided the finish is indeed original.

Ok, I got some great pics...I'm certainly no expert on these, but it looks to me like it's never been messed with. Looks like original tape on the pickguard(?), no overspray on the shielding plates or wiring, pots, pickup, etc. appear untouched. It's odd that it does seem to have some sort of blueish undercoat...yet the Dakota Red seems to be totally original as well. The guitar is a bit of an oddball....an early 69 heel date and serial #, but still has the early style decal and Kluson tuners rather than the newer "MUSIC MASTER" decal and F tuners. Anyone seeing anything odd or unoriginal here that I'm missing?

Thanks! I was kinda nervous when it took awhile to get the pictures, but was really happy with what i saw. I think this one's gonna have to be added to the fleet. It's had a recent fret dressing and pro set-up, so it should be ready to rock. I'm actually just curious if another MM can play as nicely as my first one, or if I just got lucky with it.
