1978 Guild S-60

Post by JSett » Fri Apr 19, 2024 11:21 pm

I realised I never documented this one as I was away from the forum when it came in.

After selling my S-70 last year I was on the lazy hunt for the single pickup version (the S-60). They're not particularly common but when they turn up they can vary wildly in price. This appeared on FB Marketplace just listed under "Old Guild Guitar" and two very shitty photos - classic 'this is gonna be a bargain' setup. It was just 20mins drive away too.

As it came. Gotta love a headstock full of string blinders...

All original under the hood until I 'Johnny'd' it by removing the tone pot and upgrading things a little. It had a Phat Cat for a short time:

The original tuners were rubbish so GaryPtaszek donated some Kluson 3x3's which required a little drilling but there was already some holes there (including one really small, maybe 1.5mm, hole all the way through!). These have been a big improvement.

Now if you scroll back up and look how faded the logo was, I got a replacement from Croix and fixed that. Perfect fit right over the top...

It's since had an Oil City Big Block tele style bridge pickup put in and sounds like pure rock 'n' roll

The balance on these things is great and they're super light. Almost like an SG but without the weird pushed-forward hand position and flakey neck heel joint. Neck feels like a mid-60s Fender but with a narrow spacing at the (roller) bridge. I should gig this thing really...it's pretty stable and sounds great.

On the hunt for a black one now :D
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Cool. Have never seen one before. What's the scale length and fb radius?

Awesome! Looks like a fun guitar. I’ve not tried a Guild with that body shape.

Did you play it much with the stock pickup? I think it's probably an HB1 and the guild lot really really rate those original ones.

It's 24.75" scale. Radius is 9.5" apparently

I did, but it was too microphonic for my setup. I've heard they are highly rated though

So cool...I'd love to see a Newark St. reissue, as long as it had a neck more like the Surfliner than the Polara.
