63’ Jaguar..Hemming and Hawing

Post by TeaLifeTeaMind » Fri Dec 15, 2023 3:33 pm

My friend owns a guitar shop and this 63’ Jag just came in on consignment. Missing OG case and trem arm, has a replacement guard and bridge. Obviously stripped and clear coated. Vintage, but non OG tuners also. For sure pickups, body and controls are original. Played it and it sounds the part. I have a 64’ Jag and this one sounds just as good. That headstock though. Is there anyone on OSG who can fabricate and attach a matching chunk to make the headstock whole again? The asking price is $3500, but I might be able to talk that down a bit.

The neck plays great. He says the neck is stamped “63” and appears to be OG. Any thoughts on price based on what is good and not so good? I don’t mind player grade, but would like to fix that headstock. Thanks in advance for your input…

I mean, they pretty much made it into a Swinger headstock, right? That's kinda cool. I'd just roll with it, that's a great price.

I may bring my 64’ in to play side by side with this one. I’m sure that would help settle things. I also have a guitar hoarder friend who is offset curious and may want to jump on this, and if that happens, I’m cool with it.

I don't fault Marc for trying to get the best price for the seller and he has bills to pay himself. I got a killer deal from him a year or so ago for a 72' or 73' Tele Deluxe that had the finish stripped, a replacement bridge and some swapped-out wiring. In that case, I was surprised he wasn't asking more, but with this trimmed headstock, missing case and arm, replacement guard and bridge, sub 3K would seem priced to sell. Who knows, locally we seem to have our share of Blues lawyers and doctors for whom $3-4K is pocket change. I will say that it felt lightweight compared to my 64', the frets seemed decent and it played well.

Yeah that's fair, I can't wait to play it tomorrow, I have to drop my Jazz Bass off for a set up anyways. Should be fun, but I'm not really in the market for another jaguar so don't worry lol.

Personally I reckon putting a real tort plate on and adding a 'Fender'- only decal on would make it look so fuckin cool if the price was right,

yeah exactly, I was expecting it to be like 2k in which case I probably would’ve gone for it. At this price it’s a hell no.

I'd say $2.3k would be a goer still, but yeah $3.5k is high... guess you can't circumvent your mate to get to the private seller and negotiate without commission coming into play...

I don’t get how anybody thinks the headstock looks cool that just makes me sad.

At this point like the wood from the body and what, the pickups are there? For me like all the things that would make me want that guitar in the first place are gone. A gutted and replacement part-filled body with a butchered headstock neck that’s missing the original tuners, yeah it just doesn’t do it for me.

That is where I am at as well with it. I have another vintage Jag, so this was just a curiosity. It plays well but there isn’t enough left of what makes a Jaguar cool to make me want to buy it…

I paid £1700 for a 60’s parts Jag in the summer, which was definitely at the high end. That’s around $2150? It was actually more than that, but the exchange rates were in my favour on my dollar card, so I was thinking in pounds and the market on this side of the pond. I ultimately justified what I paid based on what I could get on all the different parts, the fact that I absolutely loved it and that I didn’t have any sort of vintage Jag to compete against it - and could probably never hope to at that sort of price at that time.

I love this too and at least the body and neck appear to match, but that headstock is a major distractor. I’m sure it’s a great player and is probably of interest to someone who doesn’t have a vintage Jag and won’t go to market prices on them. Thinking along those lines, the asking price feels too high, particularly now that guitar prices are cooling.

Because of the headstock, I don’t think you can price the guitar as complete. Instead, I’d be looking at what you could get for the neck and what you could get for the body. I don’t know the market over there, but I’d be surprised if it’s anywhere near the asking price. If I did my research and felt that a neck like that still retained some value, I’d possibly pay near what I paid for my parts Jag. Low 2K range?
