NGD: Teal Green Metallic '66 Jag

Post by smjenkins » Sat Sep 16, 2023 12:19 pm

I've been hunting for a vintage Sherwood Green offset forever, but I stumbled upon the next best thing. I picked this up from Robby Z (of all my vintage guitars were in a storage unit and got stolen fame). This was one of the last guitars he recovered and was kind of over the adventure at that point. He ended up letting it go for less than he paid.

I tried to capture the color in a few different lighting conditions. Teal Green Metallic is one of the rarer custom colors and as you can see from the wear on the forearm contour, the clear coat has yellowed quite a bit and makes it even closer to Sherwood. The guitar has a good amount of wear but it is not trashed. It did need a ton of setup love when it arrived. I removed the extra string tree that someone foolishly installed. Added a bit more truss rod tension and shimmed the neck enough to get the perfect bridge height for the mute to work and then dialed in the bridge for low action. One of the neck screw holes was lightly stripped so I put in two toothpicks to get it locked in tight.

Electronically, everything works fine but the rhythm and neck pick toggle switches are twitchy. Any suggestions on how to clean or repair those switches? Other than that, it is an amazing guitar that now plays as good as it looks.

This sort of colour works so well on a Jaguar with all the chrome...very cool! :-*

Amazing score.

Also, there's no wonder that people get Fender colours confused all the time. This could easily be OTM, SWG or TGM depending on the lighting without knowing how much the clear coat yellowed.

Oh man! What a stunning guitar!!

The vibrancy of the colour in the first few of pics is all good but those last 2 more muted shots make may jaw drop!!!
If I was mixing may own custom greeny-blue, that'd be it. Somewhere in-between Lake Placid Blue, Pelham blue & aged Charcoal Frost.

That's pretty special! Invest in a can of Deoxit spray to clean the switches first, hopefully that does the trick.

That is stunning. I too always thought the dream was Sherwood D+B with matching headstock, but now I'm not so sure! Wow.

Fuuuuucccckkkkk... That is hot.... Congrats on the NGD!!!!!

Re:Switches - Compressed air to 'gently' blow the switches out a bit then a little deoxit. Move the switch 15-20 times to make sure the deoxit works its way into/on the contacts. Should work like a charm.

How can you really tell it's Teal Green? It looks really close to OTM. I know these colors often do that (Ice Blue and Firemist Silver, too). But I'd never come to TGM based on evidence of OTMs I have seen.

Not hating, just trying to learn.
