What's the history on maple necks with pearloid blocks+binding?
I feel like I've asked this before, or someone else has - but what's the history on maple necks with pearloid blocks and white binding? Didn't Fender make these briefly in the 70's? What years? What models?
Thinking of doing a cool bass build and kind of want to do this....

Early 1970s, if I can recall correctly. I have the 1970 catalog and it still has maple and black B&B as an option, while a 1974 dealer sheet I have lists a Jazz Bass with maple neck and pearloid blocks. So my guess would be '72 or '73.
Edit: this site implies 1974 was the first appearance. Wikipedia says "mid-to-late 1973".

As for models, I don't think I've ever seen maple and pearloid blocks on anything but Jazz basses, though I'm by no means an authority. All the six stringers were just maple and black blocks, from what I've experienced.
I don't think I've ever even seen a vintage P Bass with it--though I'd love to!

1968 is the earliest Jazz Bass with black blocks that I've seen, and 1974-1975 was the transition period to pearl blocks on maple. There is the occasional pearl block neck dated as '74 and a whole bunch of black blocks still dated as '75.

Those maple w/black blocks look super cool - although I wasn't originally enthused, I really dig them now.

Before the Allparts Jazzmaster necks I posted about last week or so - I‘ve only once seen them in real life - on a Jazz Bass - could have been a Marcus Miller signature Bass but definitely a Fender.

Maple neck with Pearloid Blocks…that was your original question, wasn‘t it?N0_Camping4U wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 11:06 amOnly seen one what? with black B and B? white B and B? or D and B?MayTheFuzzBeWithYou wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 10:41 amBefore the Allparts Jazzmaster necks I posted about last week or so - I‘ve only once seen them in real life - on a Jazz Bass - could have been a Marcus Miller signature Bass but definitely a Fender.

Yeah, I just immediately asked another question and didn't know if you were replying to that question. S'what happens when I ask too many questions in the same thread!MayTheFuzzBeWithYou wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 1:01 pmMaple neck with Pearloid Blocks…that was your original question, wasn‘t it?N0_Camping4U wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 11:06 amOnly seen one what? with black B and B? white B and B? or D and B?MayTheFuzzBeWithYou wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 10:41 amBefore the Allparts Jazzmaster necks I posted about last week or so - I‘ve only once seen them in real life - on a Jazz Bass - could have been a Marcus Miller signature Bass but definitely a Fender.
