Hello nineteen seventy-two, too! (Update page 3)
So, Johnny and I did some buying yesterday. I very much impulse bought this, I know very little indeed about Mustangs. I was mainly concerned our local vintage guitar shop some 3 miles from the seller would sniff out the bargains and take the lot off the guy before we could get down there. Luckily we made it in time!
Introducing the Miami-Stang! 1972 (yet to have it apart and double check) Mustang.
I had a CIJ Compstang briefly and didn't get on with it. It remains to be seen if I get on with this but it looks so cool with the Decoboom guard! Just look at how 3D it is! Never seen anything like it on a guitar, I love it.
Currently has creamery pups which sound great. Neck is nice and chunky, Johnny says it's similar to a late 70s Musicmaster. What the seller called the original pickguard was in the (also original!) case with an original-looking staggered pole neck pickup and some kind of stacked pickup in the bridge. If anyone knows what that might be, do chime in!
The neckplate has some pretty bad tarnishing. I found some flakes of chrome on my trousers after looking at the top on my lap - it'd just rubbed straight off. Might buy a new neckplate just to avoid the danger of metal splinters. The stamp on the Vibrato has also almost completely disappeared (or was never there to start with). I can just about make out half of the word "Dynamic" and the end of "Vibrato" but aside from a VERY feint indent in the metal, the Fender logo is completely gone!
Frets are also pretty gritty so the steel wool and vacuum will be out later.
Slight suspicions of it being a refin? Does seem to have an undercoat, though?
Checking!

Nice x2!
The pickguard is ridiculous.
Interesting how this person knows their pickups (creamery) & bridges (mastery), but still selling for good prices.
Amazing work all round. I think it’s time I moved out of the city to find some vintage lefties.

I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

Great score! I love Mustangs. A good Mustang is as good as any guitar.
I dig the deco boom guard, but also think the mint guard would look awesome.

Re: Hello nineteen seventy-two, too!
I feel like you need to have a Tom Selleck-level mustache to pull off that pickguard. Or be playing Brown Eyed Girl four times a day in a cruise ship's house band.
Otherwise, looks like a great score. Congrats!
