Best method to fix a dodgy rhythm switch? 65 JM

Post by Marc » Sat Nov 19, 2022 1:36 am

Basically when in the uppermost position it is sometimes just earth buzz and crackles. Moving it on and off gets it to engage but not always. Solder joints to switch are fine and original so would prefer to not remove or replace switch. What switch cleaner should I use and where is the best point to try and work it in? Thanks!

Deoxit is the stuff and try a shot of it right into the top of the switch and work the switch back and forth. The liquid will work into the whole thing

Deoxit is hard to get at the right price here in the Uk. The go-to equivalent is Servisol Super 10
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Yes I was just looking it up and it’s so expensive. Thanks I’ll check it!

No worries. The Servisol is a small can for a tenner but you a) only need a tiny bit and thus b) lasts absolutely ages. Great for switches, pots, etc....I always have a can on my workbench ready to go.

Thanks - I got quite a can Servisol Super 10 off eBay for £8.99. I quite like eBay for buying from businesses but never sell on there anymore. Still baffles me how clunky Amazon is in 2022.

I move the switch to one pickup position or the other, then spray contact cleaner on a strip of paper, slide the paper in between the leaves, then move the switch to the middle position and slide the paper out to clean the contact points. Not for the inexperienced, but I sometimes re-bend the switch leaves if they're not making good contact. You can make it worse if you don't know what you're doing.

Perfecto! I love that stuff.

That reminds me, I must sort the scratchy volume pot on my '64

I had 2 cans of Servisol before moving house. I now have about 30 boxes of crap, one of which contains 2 cans of Servisol. I have a gig on Saturday and now my volume pot decides to start being scratchy. :derp:
