Double Jazzmaster NGD

Post by simonhpieman » Tue Jul 26, 2022 5:03 am

Well, 6 weeks apart but in the bigger scheme of things that's pretty much the old "London bus" syndrome - wait for ages then 2 suddenly come along at once.

1970 refin on the left with STRATOCASTER on the headstock and 1976 on the right which I picked up yesterday.

And a few more pics for good measure.

Having been forced to sell my 76 Starcaster and 65 Jaguar during lockdown I'm now back up to 2 vintage offsets!

The 1970 used to belong to Stonevibe on here who refinished it and kindly gave me a little background on it before I bought it off the guy he sold it to. There are big threads Stonevibe posted here but to summarise the headlines: Mojo pickups, BIG deep neck which is super comfortable, AVRI trem (original included), Staytrem bridge, collet and arm and a big old refret.

The 1976 was bought new in about 1980 buy the guy's Dad in Strasbourg, France. It's had a refret (done in Alsace, apparently. France is literally FULL of luthiers, like serious woodworky ones not just guitar enthusiasts with a screwdriver and a soldering iron, it's mad - I did a gig in Dole which is a really quite small town and there were 3 luthier shops. THREE!). The neck is a little less deep than the 1970 but plays REALLY nicely and just needs a little pickup adjustment to be exactly where it needs to be.

that's awesome! both B necks? I noticed my 78 has a bit shallower neck profile than my 72 as well, I guess they were progressing more towards thinner necks by the end of 70s

Pretty sure they're both Bs. The 70 is definitely. Haven't taken the 76 apart but it doesn't feel any thinner. Not that I'd know, I've never knowingly played an A!

my 72 has an A neck and AFAIK most of early 70s JMs I saw for sale in Europe (that means something like 6 out of 9 based ond their scarcity :D ) had A necks.

Very, very nice. I love the blackguard era JMs and they're painfully rare here in the UK I've found. I've been trying to find one while they're still half-reasonable on price but no joy yet

Congratulations 👏
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Lovely 76! I remember in the late ‘80s going into a shop in Coventry and they had a new Sunburst JM which must have been NOS as was def American with a black guard. I wanted it so badly but £550 was unobtanium for me as a 15 year old. Wonder where it is now?

lovely! reminds me of my first Pink Floyd album, "A Nice Pair"

black guard on sunburst was a fine evolution of the species, those mid-late 70's
JMs are becoming a special thing in themselves, to my eye.

how do the sounds compare? not familiar with Mojo pups...

welcome back to the vintage game!
