New Oldass Guitar Day
Spent 9 hours in Pennsylvania yesterday to get this thing. A large chunk of that time was spent on the turnpike because somehow it’s legal to make roads with no exits or u-turn spots for 30 miles at a time that you only have to go on for 1/4 a mile to find a Steak n Shake that is no longer there and has been replaced by a fucking Roy Rogers so you end up going to a Cracker Barrel in Maryland because it somehow ends up being yr best option and the food is under seasoned and maybe you have COVID and that’s why you can’t taste it very much but you really hope that’s not the case…
None of that matters. I love this guitar! I don’t typically like an all maple neck but this one feels really good, not too skinny but definitely not fat at all. Weight is good, sustains real well. It’s missing the guard, sadly, and I’m pretty sure that’s gonna be impossible to replace, and the case and guitar both are kinda musty smelling so I keep spraying ozium in/closing the case, hopefully that’ll help. I read that I need to put it in the sun. I gave it a real close look and couldn’t find any mold so fingers crossed. Came with the OHSC so even if it’s stinky it’s nice to have. Condition is great, like I don’t think this thing was played a whole lot. I’m also not typically a mark for a natural finish, but this one is really pretty. It’s covered in pretty flame all over
I’ve wanted one since the first time I saw one, had a reissue and liked it, but a ‘real’ one is definitely an all-time want for me in a guitar so I’m happy. I dunno if I’ll have it forever but it’ll definitely se sticking around for a few. I just wish I was better at photography but can’t think of any other angles necessary to get the point across on here I should take some pictures in the sun, I bet it’d really pop that way. Anyway, this guitar rules and I’m happy with it and happy to be in the Starboy Crew

Awesome! Welcome to the crew.
As for a pickguard, I've been looking for one for mine for almost 2 years now with absolutely no luck at all, so that may take a while to find!

Beautiful!
I don't get it with the pickguard black-hole - surely it's a matter of copying an existing one? I mean, there are pickguard masters all through OSG!
Unless they're ALL gone?! !

Beautiful guitar!
Put some silica gel packs in the case, they’ll help.

I have a related problem that's just as frustrating. I bought mine with no pickguard, and then about 2 months later I found it in the case pocket! Unfortunately, the little mounting bracket piece is still missing. I even have the screws! But sadly, it seems to be just as difficult to source that little metal bracket as it is to find a pickguard.
Would love to find one, if only for completeness. But after so many years with no pickguard, I'm kinda used to that look now.

Re: New Oldass Guitar Day
How can you tell it’s an early one?! I’d love any kind of pointers on what to look for with these anyone is willing to share.
It is a truly, truly sick guitar! I was able to find tiny bits of checking but it was almost impossible it’s so subtle and all sealed under so no edges to snag my fingers on or anything. It’s probably just because it’s new, but I feel like a better player with it? Just randomly popped out some new technique stuff I’d never learned or practiced before, wrote a few riffs already, it just fucking zings dudes in almost every way
The only negatives are no tremolo, which isn’t as hard to live without so far because it’s such a joy to play, and the high e saddle height screws are different than the others and thus longer, so they stick out and have become an edge I DO scrape my hand on. I checked every other bridge I have looking for some smaller ones to swap, but everything I have is the same size, sadly. Dunno what to do in the short term about it but have to do something because it’s given me a couple painful scrapes already in the past 24 hours. Probably just gonna put tape over it lol

Re: New Oldass Guitar Day
Looks lovely, congratulations. I wish they'd done these with rosewood at some point as I just can't get on with maple boards. They really look amazing with rosewood and B&B...
As for the checking, it's unlikely you'll ever find much, if any, as these were finished with poly I believe (as all Fenders were in the 70s).
For the guard, I wonder if one from the reissues would fit or could be fettled enough to fit? Maybe someone here with one could send you a good tracing and you could make a tester from card. Could be worth a shot.

Re: New Oldass Guitar Day
Definitely should have been released with rosewood and B&B. What would have really pushed it to legend territory, at least to me, would have been if they did a version with the Offset Trem.
Good looking out on the guard suggestion too, thanks

Re: New Oldass Guitar Day
No one should ever have to spend 9 hours in PA. Especially driving. They seem to have a hatred towards road signs, as none of the roads are marked. Once you get off the highway, you better know where you are. I’ve spent qn inordinate amount of time being lost on the back roads of PA.
Anyway, stellar Starcaster! I bet that thing sounds mean as hell.
