Old couple on BBC TV show 'flog it' get fleeced by idiotic pretend 'experts'
I had to laugh at this.
Our venerable daytime TV show here in the UK for ne'er do wells, old people and the unemployable recently did a show in Falmouth where some old couple brought in an early 1962 Jaguar either in Olympic white or blonde for valuation.
It was owned by a heavy heavy heavy smoker or was painted orange by a child in 1976 I suspect.
Sitting there was some idiot dressed in a smart suit pretending to be an expert and advised the couple that their 'sunburst' slab board Jag was worth a princely £300. It obviously sold for more but £1050 and the old lady was nearly in tears. So was I as it is worth considerably more than that.
No doubt it was flipped by some dealer for £8000 later...

It's like that Pawn Stars episode where some kid sold the original 52 Blackguard Telecaster of his grandfather for 13k.

Pawn Stars is a set up though. All scripted. Flog it isn't I'm sure.
It was auctioned and made £1050 and the old lady's tears were of joy sadly. I know it's a bit wrecked but it is a slab board Jaguar and probably a blonde one too. It had a chunk glued back onto the headstock but still.
The thing that rankles is the complete certainty of this 'expert' and the air of authority she is trying to summon up. Unfortunately, as with all self proclaimed 'experts', she falls flat on her face when someone who actually knows something about the subject comes along.
Just goes to show that you should always question people who attempt to don the robes of expertise lol

As a ‘63 Jaguar owner I’ve had to close this thread and go away, only to keep coming back, and coming back, and coming back. Wow. Speechless.
Isn’t Sunburst a guarantee it’s NOT a refin?

Twenty years ago, in June, I could have bought a sunburst '63 Jag for $1,500.00US. And I could have traded a G&L ASAT Classic for it, too.

Don't feel too bad, I remember reading about a guy who traded his 60s Burgundy Mist Metallic Jag for a Boss ME-5 in the 80s.

I mean, it's a shame that experts valued it for a ridiculous price - and that it'll be resold most likely.
A massive embarrassment for the "expert" and the show, but if I would be there and end up with that jag for that price.... I wouldn't complain
But if it ends up in the hands of someone who really enjoys it and the couple is happy with it... I don't mind it too much.
When I think about it, when a reseller is a bit respectful and doesn't buy the instrument to overprice it and drag it along from guitarshow to guitarshow or let it sit in a store for 30 years - who am I to judge. This happens with so many objects and objects they are in the end, I just rather see any of you buying a good jag for cheap. Which I'm happy to say I did it 10 years ago and 7 years ago, when jags were still affordable.

The benefit of hindsight doesn't make it look quite so great though!johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 4:53 amAt the time that was probably a great trade. What!!! Are you trying to say that dusty ME-5 in the back of my closet isn’t worth $10k? It is vintage, man, VINTAGE!simonhpieman wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 6:18 amThe benefit of hindsight doesn't make it look quite so great though!johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 4:53 amAt the time that was probably a great trade. Really hate myself for not knowing about or caring about these guitars when I was younger. I hadn’t discovered them, rather, but when I did I could buy custom color Jaguars for $2,000 or less and Jazzmasters for not much more than that. I also hate myself for not biting around 2010 when they were $2,500 and $3,000. Then in 2016 when my dream Jaguar was on reverb a few times over for like $4,000.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 4:53 amAt the time that was probably a great trade. Im always gonna want one but never feel good about paying for one. I imagine it’ll be worst once they’re like $25,000 in 10 years

When Generation Grunge have to sell all their worldly goods to pay for geriatric care the market should be flooded and the prices will nosedive.Mechanical Birds wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 1:35 amReally hate myself for not knowing about or caring about these guitars when I was younger. I feel like trolling all the over priced vintage sellers on Reverb with this. “$6k!!! It’s barely worth $1.5k.”
