I´d say $18M.

Given the tech & crypto crash, I’ll go $6.5m
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

Re: Cobain's Mustang up for auction
Nice compilation job, and an interesting late flurry of guesses at the lower end of the range. Maybe they got inside information that the guitar has a warped neck, or needs a refret!
Very curious about this….almost there!
Something that would be fascinating to know (for me, anyway) is the life this guitar had before Kurt. Was it played by some spotty school-kid during high school, then kept under the bed for many years until he decided to offload it in the late 80s? It probably sold for 3/5ths of fuck-all during that era when Kurt picked it up. The stuff I ponder….

Re: Cobain's Mustang up for auction
Thanks.
I guess we'll finally see if 90s tech bro wealth is as strong as 60s boomer wealth.
I've edited to add a +$1 upswing to supersonicjazzmaster's guess as it was exactly the same as Signofthedragon's. Better than having a draw.

Re: Cobain's Mustang up for auction
Also to avoid a tie, what’s the plan if the selling price falls exactly halfway between two guesses? Should we round up or down to get a winner? (I reckon up).
I’m quite possibly over-thinking this!

Re: Cobain's Mustang up for auction
Yeah, mathematically you'd go usually go up if it's .5 or above, down if it's .499999999999 or lower. Not that auction houses nickel and dime it that much on high value sales really.
What shall we do as the prize? A beat up old DS-1?

Re: Cobain's Mustang up for auction
Hmmm good question! Do you have an old DS-1 you’re keen to get rid of?
I was thinking that a sense of smugness might be the prize, but happy to chip in for something material if there’s a consensus (and willingness to organise)!

Re: Cobain's Mustang up for auction
I have one. Where it is, however, is another question...I don't think I've seen it for a few years
Self-satisfied smugness it is then. The most noble of prizes.

Re: Cobain's Mustang up for auction
.
Here’s an idea for an OSG community prize - it may fall flat but worth putting it out there.
It’s dependent on (a) the winner agreeing to it, and (b) enough people contributing to make it viable.
The plan overview:
To communally buy the OSG winner a (Japanese?) 1980s Boss DS-1.
Steps:
1. As many OSGers as possible (particularly thinking of those in the guessing comp) pledge to contribute equally to the prize.
2. I will tally up the pledges and - if we reach critical mass - purchase from Reverb the best looking 1980s DS-1 (not a modern one…to maintain Nirvana-era consistency) available for the amount pledged, and have it sent to the OSG winning guesser.
3. I will divide the cost equally (winner exempt), and request remuneration by PayPal “friends/family payment” only. No one will be charged more than US$10 (possibly less, depending on the cost and number of contributors).
If you are interested in pledging US$10 please reply in this thread (obviously i will be pledging). If you don’t want to, that’s totally cool - no pressure or judgement.
I’ll leave it open for 5 days after the Mustang auction is complete, at which time we will see if there are enough contributors to go ahead with the prize.
