Well I finally got up courage up to try and reveal the pencil date located in the bridge pickup cavity on my 1961 Jazzmaster.
I did a little research and looked into how to do this without messing it up and I finally decided to give it a crack.
FYI, the original colour was a beautiful blonde over an ash body but was repainted around 1968.
I never had any doubt about the authenticity of the guitar, however, I am curious by nature and really wanted to see that pencil date from 1961 with my own eyes.
Personally, now that its been revealed I think it adds more meaning to this guitar because you can now see the date written in the pick up cavity when it was in the Fullerton factory all those years ago.
I also like the fact you can see the original blonde finish which I think looks great. It's a shame it was repainted however 'that's life' as they say.
Interestingly the neck date matches the body date exactly. Both are October 1961.
I wonder if matching neck and body dates are common on pre CBS guitars?
Anyway we all love guitars so I bought I would post the photos for you to see.

Congrats.
IDK enough about vintage guitars to tell you if that is the original finish under there, but I do know a few members have successfully sanded back a refin to reveal the OG finish.
