NGD: '64 Jaguar, LPB refin
This got to my local FedEx depot a couple of days earlier than expected to I went to pick it up after work. I wasn't packed particularly well for such a pricey instrument but it survived nonetheless. Managed to not get flagged by CITES too.
Apologies for the lighting in these autopsy pictures, the light in my spare room/workshop is bright in places but not particularly flattering.
As it came fresh out the box. It's very blue...
I got straight to stripping it down and seeing what I have here
There's a couple of screws missing:
No extra routing, good good:
I could see it was painted without being fully stripped so I took a peek under the shielding. Candy Apple Red, anyone?....
Pickups and all pots/switches/caps appear to be OG:
Original guard has shrunk noticeably:
I'm not convinced these are the originals. No Kluson markings at all:
Dec '64, B width. It's a narrow B too (which is nice)
It's definitely been thrashed:
And how it stands with the b***stop yanked off, pots and switches all cleaned and lubed. Staytrem installed and fresh 12-56's
It sounds clear and like a Jaguar should. The bridge pickup is every so slightly microphonic but, as far as I can tell, it's not obnoxiously so. It's very light compared to my others, I'll weigh it tomorrow, and try and get some better pictures. So far it all looks original to me bar the refinish and possibly the tuners. The Original mute and bridge cover are in the case.
There is a certain amount of 'hand mojo' (read: sweat and gunk) down by the nut which is a little gross. Anyone know the best way of getting that off without messing with the broken-in wood/finish on the back of the neck?

Amazing. It really looks the part. The color looks a lot like my 66 JM, also a refin. Blue is such a great color for offsets. Happy NGD.

That's a cool piece...ironic that it's a CAR refinish. I always enjoy your threads!

Yeah, it's almost the same shade of blue the Mustang I painted last year came out. The clearcoat has yellowed somewhat (more noticeable on the back) so it must have some age to the refin. Plus the wear on it looks to be real so someone must have been rough with it too. Fine by me, it means I don't have to be scared to manhandle it or play it out.
Ironic? I swear it's a curse, me and red guitars. They just keep finding me at the moment I laughed out loud to myself when I peeked under the shielding.
I will forever love the CW, it's one of my favourite OG-OSG guitars.

I compared the nut width to my others = 1.605". The '65 I have from Rexter is 1.609", my MIJ is 1.692"
Being a man of average stature and NATO-standard-issue hand size I definitely prefer the 1.6" region for my particular thumb-over playing style. Happy to report that this is spot-on for me.
The neck carve has a very subtle V shape up to fret 4 then it softens out to a standard 60s C. Quite pleasant. I got the hand goo off with a drop or two of water on a rag then used the 3200/6000/8000 grades I have for fret polishing to balance out the feel. Silky smooth now.
I have the day off work tomorrow so I will have some time to spend with it getting to know each other and tweaking the setup

You can't escape the CAR
It looks great, definitely enjoy that one. I want to get a Jag again myself at some point before they really get out of reach price wise.
