I finally got the guard off - it was a bit tricky but the pick guard had shrunk and it was more difficult.

Sadly I cant see any pin holes :(

In any case Ive taken a lot of images so await your feedback and any comments.

Great also to see the pot dates - I think that would be first week of 61'? or is that first month of 61'?

I have no idea about the finish, but am just curious about the wiring and double output jacks. It’s clearly been tampered with, but to what end? Series/parallel switch? And what happened to the pickguard shield?

No obvious nail holes, and a cellulite-y finish. I'm guessing refin, sadly. Could be wrong though.

The pick guard shield was clearly left off at one point I presume many years ago.

I'll get another to replace it.

The double jacks I am pretty certain is due to an effort again many years ago to transform the guitar to operational stereo.

I've read that this was quite a thing back in the 60's and Gibson was exploring this.

A very cool thing I found inside of the case was a hand drawn diagram showing how he electronics were put together.

An image is below.

The guitar is now running off one output jack and not two.

I'll also get to this when the re-fret is done.

Cheers.

something about this guitar is screaming refin to me. it's a good refin and clearly an older refin (maybe about 20 years). i think it's the grey primer and how clean it is.

The man I bought this from was in his very late 70's if not early 80's.

He told me he bought the guitar second hand in 1967 for $150.00.

He told me he's never had it painted.

I guess based on that it would have been re-finished in the mid 60's?

I don’t need to see more photos. Grey primer is just a no no. It was used in car spray shops..never by Fender. So it was probably done by a friend in a car body shop long ago…white was a very popular refin colour back then and is quite common to see.

There are rumours that Stamford (the original Fender importer into Oz) did their own refins to guitars as soon as they landed…similar to the Selmer refins you find in the UK….so could be one of those if true.

Wow amazing I didn’t know that Stamford was the Fender importer.

Do you have any more info or links?

Yes it seems likely but it’s still a keeper.

I didn’t pay very much for it so even though it’s refinished I’m way in front.

It’s a beautiful guitar!
