Re: No re-fin should ever be priced higher than a reasonable condition original sunburst of the same year
this all is bullshit discussion. the finish on my guitar is 100% original, though: rotten. will you buy me a house and a happy lie please? this is pointless. looking forward to a Squier. will put guitars up FS, but I'd rather not be part of blah. So much for ' original finishes'.

So, stealing ideas is the good kind of capitalism, but massively marking up guitars is the bad kind?

Found this beyond fucked up indefensible listing of a body from a $400 brand new and complete Squier (so, what, without the neck as a loaded body would probably top out around $250, at most?) bolted to a $850 EGC bolt-on neck
For $2,700
Twenty
Seven
Hundred
Dollars
Two Thousand Seven Hundred Dollars
Are EGC pickups like $600 a piece somehow? Shit like this is disgusting and infuriating and it’s gonna piss me off to see that it sold for like $2400 a week from now.

I totally get being pissed about the guitar market right now, and that M&M's prices are definitely high. That said though, people are definitely paying those prices, or they wouldn't keep asking them.
Is that really their fault?
If you had a guitar that you could sell for $5000, even if it was recently only worth about $2500... how much would you ask? Would you only ask $2500 out of the goodness of your heart? No, you'd fucking ask for top dollar and you'd get it. That's... just the way it works.

If I had a guitar that was worth that much and I wanted to sell it, I would try to sell it for that much. My sense is that what rubs people the wrong way is that it isn’t just a couple of guys unloading their guitars. I don’t know them but from what I can tell these guys have built a business on snatching up guitars that others would have bought for reasonable prices and marking them up to levels beyond the means of most people, without adding any real value other than dressing them up and preparing a fancy write-up. It’s a legitimate business model, but it is annoying for folks trying to find good deals.adamrobertt wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 4:58 pm

Ha! Didn’t realize I stepped on a land mine there - thought it was non-controversial to praise the guy who invented the light bulb, but should have known better.

No. I wouldn't. Not everyone is a total shark when it come to profiteering. There's plenty of individuals, and shops, that aren't of that mindset and believe in an honest and reasonable price for things. I do it daily in my job and have a lot of satisfied and regular clients because of it. They know they came come to me, get what they want, and not get ripped-off in the process. Being 'gentlemanly' in business is an often overlooked way of trading.adamrobertt wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 4:58 pmIf you had a guitar that you could sell for $5000, even if it was recently only worth about $2500... how much would you ask? During the lockdowns I was forced out of work and turned to buying and selling as much as possible in order to pay my bills. I had some very good luck on some things that I knew I could turn a healthy profit on (guitar equipment and vintage collectibles/furnishings). I didn't take the piss with my prices and they sold quickly and both myself, and the buyers, ended up doing well out of the situations.
Not everyone, or every business, are arseholes about it. M&Ms are just being dicks. The sheer fact they don't have the 'offers' turned on on their listings shows a certain undeniable arrogance as well.
